Sony’s new FE 50-150mm F2 GM is easily one of their most exciting recent releases—offering even more unique versatility than the new FE 28-70mm F2.0 GM it pairs with so well. But that jaw-dropping price tag means it’s inevitably going to be pitted against its more 'budget-friendly' sibling—the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM II (cheaper) and the Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 (much cheaper!).

This size comparison really drives home the Tamron’s appeal: it’s noticeably smaller, way more budget-friendly, and that 35 mm wide end is super handy in tons of shooting scenarios. The Sony 70-200 mm has its own wins—it’s cheaper than the 50-150 mm, packs in OSS, and plays nicely with 1.4× and 2.0× teleconverters that the 50-150 mm can’t handle. Unless you absolutely need a constant f/2 aperture, I’d pick the Tamron or the Sony 70-200 mm over the new 50-150 mm.
