Canon R6 III vs Canon R6 V Front View Size Comparison
Good news if you shoot with either of Canon's newest R6 bodies. Two fresh firmware updates just landed, and one of them fixes something a lot of EOS R6 V owners have been grumbling about since day one.
Let's get into it.
EOS R6 V: Firmware v1.1.0
This is the big one. The headline feature is that the R6 V can finally fire a flash. Yep, at launch this camera couldn't do it, which was a weird limitation for anyone who wanted to use the R6 V for stills as well as video. Now that's sorted.

The new flash support isn't just a bare bones "it works" situation either. You get:
- Flash firing with external units
- E-TTL metering and balancing
- Slow synchro support
- Full flash function settings, including custom settings
So if you were holding off on the R6 V because you actually need to light your shots, this update changes the math.
On top of the flash stuff, v1.1.0 also throws in a few nice extras:
- You can now set a grid display during movie recording
- Support for the Wireless Remote Controller BR-E2
- Support for the Software Development Assistance Kit (EDSDK/CCAPI)
- The usual round of bug fixes and general stability improvements
Not a bad little package for a first major update.
EOS R6 Mark III: Firmware v1.1.0
The R6 Mark III update is a bit more low key. It's mostly a bug fix release with a handful of small feature and compatibility additions, but there's still stuff worth grabbing here.
New features include:
- The ability to set AF for close-up demos during movie recording, usable in Movie manual exposure, Movie auto exposure, and other Creative Zone modes, so it plays nicely with your exposure and AF area settings
- Grid display during movie recording
- Support for the Wireless Remote Controller BR-E2
- Support for the Software Development Assistance Kit (EDSDK/CCAPI)
And on the bug fix side, Canon patched a few annoying ones:
- Fixed an issue where image transfers to an FTP server could fail and throw an Err41
- Fixed an issue that could affect shooting if auto power off kicked in during interval timer shooting
- Fixed an issue where the camera might not be recognized when connected to a smartphone over USB
Nothing flashy, but the FTP and interval timer fixes are the kind of thing that'll save someone a ruined shoot down the line.
Should You Update?
Short answer, yeah. If you own an R6 V, the flash support alone makes this a no brainer. And if you're on the R6 Mark III, the bug fixes are reason enough to grab it, especially if you shoot tethered or use interval timers.
As always, make sure your battery is topped up before you flash the firmware, and don't turn the camera off mid update. You know the drill.
