Teleconverters are a favorite among bird and wildlife photographers because they offer a simple and effective way to extend the reach of existing lenses. They have traditionally been paired with telephoto and super-telephoto glass. With the arrival of the FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM, that pattern shifts on E-mount. This is the first macro lens in the lineup that supports 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, opening the door to new close-up possibilities without changing systems or lenses.
Sony FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM is the latest E-mount lens with Teleconverter Compatibility
There are currently two teleconverters for the Sony FE mirrorless system: the FE 1.4x TC and the FE 2.0x TC. As the names imply, they boost the effective focal length by 1.4x and 2.0x. In exchange, they reduce light transmission by 1 stop and 2 stops respectively.
Sony FE 1.4x and 2.0x Teleconverters
Both teleconverters are regarded for their excellent optical quality. They pass full electronic communication between lens and body, so metering, autofocus, and optical stabilization remain active. They are weather sealed to match the lenses they pair with. Any hit to image quality or AF speed is modest, and it is especially small with the 1.4x TC.
As with most teleconverters, these Sony FE TCs work with only the selected supported lenses. As of 2025, there are 9 Sony FE lenses that can be used with Sony FE 1.4x and 2.0x TCs. Here is table of how the effective focal length and aperture of these lenses change when used with the Sony FE 1.4x TC:

And now, we have the table table of how the effective focal length and aperture of these lenses change when used with the Sony FE 2x TC:
Effective Focal Range and Aperture with Sony FE 2x TC
Looking at these tables, the range you can achieve with Sony’s teleconverters is genuinely impressive. The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8.0 can effectively turn into an 800-1600mm F12.6–F16 setup with the 2.0x TC, which is a huge reach for distant subjects. The FE 100mm F2.8 Macro becomes a 200mm F5.6 equivalent with a remarkable 2.8x maximum magnification, making it excellent for extreme macro work given the lens’s native 1.4x limit.
Sony FE 300mm F2.8 and FE 600mm F4 GM Lenses are compatible with Teleconverters
Another standout with teleconverters is the Sony FE 300mm f2.8 GM OSS. Many photographers pair it with the 2.0x TC for birding and wildlife, creating a 600mm F5.6 combination that maintains strong image quality and reliable autofocus performance while delivering serious reach.
