The statement went up on Sony's own Japanese site (Sony.jp) on July 28, the same day orders started. The gist is simple: orders have far exceeded what Sony forecast, delivery may take longer than usual, and the company says it is doing its utmost to get cameras to customers. No hard numbers, which is normal for these things. Sony rarely puts a figure on preorder volume. But an official "please be patient" note on launch day is about as clear a demand signal as you get.
When Will You Actually Get One?

- Japan: orders opened July 28. Sony's Japan store lists the handle-unit model with an August 21 release date, but delivery is now pegged at early September, so the ship date has already slipped past the launch.
- US: the early shipping window is mid-August, and both versions of the camera (with and without the XLR top handle) are already flagged as top sellers at B&H.
- The rule of thumb: the earlier your preorder landed, the better your chance of hitting that first window. Later orders are the ones most likely to wait.
So if you already got your order in during the first day, you are probably fine. If you are still thinking about it, expect a queue.

The demand is not a surprise once you look at the spec sheet. The FX5 records 5K60 open gate (3:2) and 5K120 (16:9) internally in X-OCN RAW, has three base ISO settings, and borrows the interface language from Sony's high-end VENICE cinema cameras, including a Multi-Function Dial.
