Canon EOS R7 and R50 Get a Boost: New Firmware v1.8.0 and v1.5.0
Canon EOS R7 and EOS R50
Canon just released a fresh batch of firmware updates for its popular APS-C mirrorless cameras, the EOS R7 and the EOS R50. These updates focus on expanding creative options and squashing a few pesky bugs that some users have encountered. Whether you are a professional using the R7 as a high speed backup or a beginner enjoying the compact R50, these stability and feature improvements are worth the download.
Canon EOS R7: Firmware Version 1.8.0
The EOS R7 receives several notable refinements in this latest version. One of the most welcome additions is the inclusion of new aspect ratio options. Photographers can now select [3:2] and [1:1] specifically for still image aspect ratios, providing more flexibility for those who want to frame their shots for social media or specific print sizes directly in-camera.
Beyond framing, this update fixes a frustrating issue where the Err70 message would occasionally appear during Bluetooth communication. This was often caused by interference from other nearby Bluetooth devices. Additionally, a similar error that occurred during High Speed Continuous Shooting+ mode has been resolved.

Canon EOS R50: Firmware Version 1.5.0
The compact EOS R50 also gets a stability bump to version 1.5.0. Like its sibling, the R50 now supports the RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL lens with improved display settings. It also gains the new [3:2] and [1:1] aspect ratio options for still images.
While the R50 update is slightly more focused on general system stability, it ensures that this entry-level powerhouse stays reliable for everyday shooting and content creation.
How to Update
To install these updates, you can download the firmware files directly from Canon's support pages. Ensure your battery is fully charged before starting the process. You can update by copying the file to your SD card and navigating to the firmware version section in your camera's setup menu.
