    Weather Sealing

Canon R50 doesn't have any environmental sealings on its body so you got to be extra careful to protect it against water and dust. If you shoot under these conditions very often, consider checking Top Mirrorless Cameras with Weather Sealing page.

Canon R50 Lens Mount and Lenses

Canon R50 has a Canon RF lens mount and currently there are 37 native lenses available for this mount. Canon's new RF mount features a 54mm diameter and short 20mm flange-back distance, which makes it possible to design lenses that are faster and smaller than their EF mount equivalents. RF mount also provides a 12-pin electronic contact system for advanced autofocus and image stabilization capabilities, making it compatible to existing EF and EF-S-mount lenses via an optional EF-EOS R Mount Adapter.

Canon R50 doesn't have a sensor based image stabilization system but 26 of these lenses already comes with Optical Image Stabilization.

    Lens Breathing Correction

One of the most impressive feature that will make the videographers very happy with the Canon EOS R50 is the Lens Breathing Correction The R50 camera corrects the Lens breathing effect (for supported lenses) where the angle of view thus your framing changes undesirably when the lens focus plane switches between close and far objects. This makes the Canon R50 one of only 6 Cameras to have a Lens Breathing Correction.

Weather Sealed Lenses for Canon R50

There are 20 lenses with weather sealing for Canon R50 but bear in mind that R50 body doesn't have weather sealings.

Canon R50 Sensor and Photography Features

Canon R50 has a 24.0MP APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Digic X processor. You can shoot at maximum resolution of 6000 x 4000 pixels with aspect ratios of 1:1, 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9. R50 has a native ISO range of 100 - 32000 which can be boosted to 100-51200 and it can save files in RAW format which gives you a wider room for post processing.

Canon R50 is not the highest resolution APS-C camera. Fujifilm X-T5 with its 40.2MP sensor is leading in this class. Check the comparison of Canon R50 vs Fujifilm X-T5 or take a look at Highest resolution Mirrorless cameras list.

Let's look at how the size of the Canon R50's APS-C sensor compares with other standard sensor sizes.

    Canon R50 LCD and Viewfinder

Canon R50 has a Fully Articulated 3.00-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 1,040k dots. Articulated screens are more video oriented compared to only tilting or fixed screens. On the other hand, photography oriented users generally prefer tilting screens. Both the screen size and the screen resolution is up to the standards of this class.

LCD is Touch screen type, so you can change the settings and set the focus point with your fingertips.

Canon R50 back view and LCD

For those of you who loves shooting selfies, self or group photos, Canon R50 will make your life easier with its Selfie friendly screen. Another group of users who will take advantage of R50's LCD screen are Vloggers and any video creators who are working in a single-person setup.

R50 has a built-in Electronic viewfinder, making it easier to shoot in direct sunlight and in other situations where it might be difficult to view the LCD monitor. The viewfinder has a resolution of 2,360kdots and coverage of 100%. 100% coverage ensures that what you see in the viewfinder while shooting matches exactly what you will get later in your image, helping accurate framing your shots and minimizes the need for cropping images later. The magnification ratio of the viewfinder is 0.59x (35mm equivalent).

Canon R50 Connectivity, Storage and Battery

Canon R50 features built-in wireless (Wi-Fi) connectivity ( 802.11b/g/n + Bluetooth) which lets you transfer your photos directly to compatible devices without any physical connection. Canon R50's Bluetooth connectivity feature comes handy for connecting other devices that supports it. One other feature that we like is the ability to use our smartphone as a remote to control our R50. You can change camera settings, release shutter, view LCD screen and tranfer files using remote control app.

You can connect R50 to compatible devices via its HDMI port or USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 GBit/sec) port.

Canon R50 also features USB charging capability which let's you charge your camera via a usb cable without removing the battery.

    Canon R50 Battery

Canon R50 is powered by LP-E17 battery which provides a battery life of 370 shots according to CIPA standards. Considering that the average battery life of Mirrorless type cameras is 382 shots, its battery life is about average in its class but it would still be wise to invest in some spare batteries for long photo trips.

    Canon R50 Video Features

With Canon R50, you can record your videos at a highest resolution of 3840 x 2160 at 60p,30p,24p fps with bit rates up to 170 mbps and save in MPEG-4, H.264 and H.265 formats. Canon R50's 4K is the common standard resolution in consumer video world.

    Video Resolutions Comparison Chart

A great advantage of Canon R50 while shooting video at resolution of 4K is that there is no crop factor so you can use your lens at its actual focal length.

    No Video Recording Limit

Canon EOS R50 doesn't have the 30 minutes max video recording limitation that many cameras have, so you can keep recording non-stop until either your storage is full or battery is depleted or the camera over-heats.

    High-Speed Video

R50 features a high speed mode where it captures videos at 120fps which helps to create slow motion videos. If you shoot a video at a frame rate of 120fps and play it back at 24fps, the video will be 5x slower and longer than normal.

    Microphones, Speaker and Headphone Connections

Canon EOS R50 has a built-in Stereo microphone and a Mono speaker. Canon R50 also has a port for an external microphone so you can record high quality sound with the help of an external microphone. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a headphone port though.

    Electronic Video Stabilization

Canon R50 also features an Digital Video Stabilization mode where videos are stabilized in-camera while you are shooting. Keep in mind that this effect may crop your videos a little bit and doesn't help stabilizing still images. This kind of video stabilization effect can be replicated by using some of the advanced video editing softwares in your PC.

    Canon R50 Other Features

    Max Shutter speed

Canon R50 can shoot continuously at max speed of 12.0 fps and has max shutter speed of 1/4000 sec. R50 also has an electronic shutter which can shoot silently at max speed of 1/8000s. One thing to keep in mind is that electronic shutter may cause rolling shutter / jello effects, and also banding issues under artificial light on your images.

    Flash

R50 has a built-in flash, and it also has a flash shoe to mount your external flashes too.

    Focusing

Canon R50 features both Contrast Detection and Phase Detection autofocus (AF) systems which ensures speed and accuracy of focusing in most situations. The AF system has 651 points to choose from.

Canon R50 also features Face detection AF where it intelligently detects the faces in the frame and locks the focus automatically. In addition to the face detect AF, R50 has a more sophisticated feature called Eye Tracking AF which detects and locks focus to the selected eye of the person in the frame accurately and tracks as the subject moves. Eye tracking AF of Canon R50 is a perfect feature for shooting portraits and is especially useful when fast lenses are used and the depth of field is very narrow.
