In order to ensure a fair fight, we tested both teleconverters on a tripod using the Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS, and the 60MP Sony Alpha A7R V with identical camera settings. At the maximum aperture (where most photographers will use this 600mm equivalent combo), the results are surprising. The Viltrox displays slightly better contrast than the Sony, while the raw resolution remains virtually indistinguishable.

At f/11, the Sony FE 2.0x TC edges out a slight lead in fine detail resolution. However, the difference is minimal and likely falls within testing tolerances.
The Verdict: A New King of Value?
In our controlled environment, the Viltrox 2.0x TC performed admirably, matching and occasionally exceeding the contrast of its Sony counterpart. While the Sony holds a microscopic lead at smaller apertures like f/11, the Viltrox’s performance at f/5.6 makes it a formidable tool for sports and wildlife photographers.
When you factor in the price - $280 for the Viltrox versus $598 for the Sony- it’s hard not to declare the Viltrox a winner for those on a budget. You are getting nearly identical optical quality for less than half the cost.

It is important to remember that image quality is only one piece of the puzzle. Autofocus speed and accuracy are critical when using extenders, especially for fast-moving subjects.
