Tamron 16-30mm f2.8 Di III VXD G2 is the latest lens of the Trinity and released in Sony E and Nikon Z mounts
With today’s launch of the 16-30mm f2.8 Di III VXD G2 ($929), Tamron has officially completed its G2 (second-generation) holy trinity of f/2.8 zoom lenses, at least for the Sony E-mount. The other two lenses in the series are the 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 and the 70-180mm F2.8 Di III VC VXD G2. For Nikon Z-mount users, only the 16-30mm and 28-75mm G2 versions are currently available, as the 70-180mm G2 has yet to be released for that system.

Tamron has impressively managed to keep the prices of all its G2 lenses under $1,000, although the 70-180mm required a $100 discount to bring it below that mark. This is especially appreciated considering the current market conditions in the USA and the recent price increases caused by new tariffs.

How it Compares with Sony Trinity in Price?
For a typical three-lens setup for Sony E-mount, a user would pay around $2,730 for the Tamron trio. In comparison, a similar Sony-branded setup including the FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II, FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM, and FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II would cost a total of $7,400 ($2,298 + $2,298 + $2,798). While the GM II lenses are arguably better in almost every way, having a complete set of F2.8 zoom lenses for less than price of a single Sony 70-200mm F2.8 is definitely an attractive option for photographers on a tighter budget.
