Sony Alpha A9 Mark III with a 24MP Global Shutter Sensor
DxO Mark has released the sensor test results for the Sony Alpha A9 Mark III global shutter mirrorless camera, and the scores fell short of top-tier expectations. The A9 III’s global shutter sensor, while showing excellent characteristics with zero rolling shutter, extreme reading speeds, impressive AF tracking performance, and up to 120fps shooting with AF tracking, was anticipated to face some challenges, particularly in dynamic range performance, which is reflected in the test scores.

The A9 III is the second most expensive camera in Sony’s lineup, priced at an MSRP of $5,999, just behind the Sony Alpha A1 at $6,499. The A1 is considered a more versatile option due to its 50MP stacked sensor, offering higher resolution and fewer compromises. Sony is expected to announce the A1 Mark II( and the Sony FE 28-70mm F2.0 GM lens) today—stay tuned for updates—which will feature the A9 III’s body while retaining the 50MP sensor, enhanced with improved processors and algorithms. It will be interesting to see how the new A1 II will compare against the A9 III.
