Sigma has once again set itself apart from other lens makers with the launch of the Sigma 17-40mm f1.8 DC Art (MSRP $919), a constant f/1.8 zoom lens built for APS-C cameras, available in Sony E, Leica L, Fujifilm X, and Canon RF mounts.

As expected, the ultra-fast f/1.8 aperture comes with a significant price premium over typical f/2.8 zooms. And while APS-C cameras are often chosen for their compact size, this large and heavy lens may offset that benefit. Still, the appeal of such a fast aperture -especially for low-light shooting or achieving shallow depth of field- will make it a compelling option for many photographers with specific needs. In the end, it’s a clear trade-off, and one that some will happily make.
