New Sigma 12mm F1.4 DC C APS-C Lens not released in Leica L mount
I always thought it was a bit odd that Sigma kept rolling out all of its new APS-C lenses in L-Mount. Sure, they’ve been one of the biggest supporters of the L-Mount ecosystem, but here’s the catch: there have only ever been three APS-C cameras with L-Mount - the Leica TL, TL2, and CL - and the newest of those came out way back in 2017!

Leica CL vs TL2 vs TL APS-C sensor L Mount Cameras
All the other L-Mount cameras, from Leica, Sigma, or Panasonic, are full-frame. So what was the point of releasing APS-C-only lenses for L-Mount? You can use APS-C lenses on full-frame cameras, but they only use the APS-C portion of the sensor. That reduces resolution and makes the effective focal length 1.5 times longer, which really defeats the purpose.

Sigma's 17-40mm f1.8 DC Art and 16-300mm f3.5-6.7 DC OS C are the two latest APS-C lenses that were released also in L-mount:
Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 and 16-300mm f3.5-6.7 C
Interestingly, Sigma might have just pulled the plug on that idea. Their latest release, the Sigma 12mm f1.4 DC C, is only coming to Sony E, Fujifilm X, and Canon RF mounts this time, with no L-Mount version at all. Does this signal the end of L-Mount APS-C Sigma lenses, is it just an exception, or will they come to L-Mount later? We don’t know. One thing I do know for sure though is that I want to see new APS-C L-Mount cameras in the future, whether from Leica, Panasonic, or Sigma. I would probably lean toward Panasonic or Sigma for affordability, though!

How about you? Would you like to see APS-C L-Mount cameras that are more compact and more affordable than full-frame models? Let us know in the comments.
