Leica SL3-S vs Panasonic S5 II X
Before I begin this comparison, I’d like to set aside the typical Leica fan arguments that start with phrases like "there is something special about Leica XXX..." I understand and appreciate Leica myself—I owned an M10-R, which I still regret selling, and I’m currently using a D-Lux 8 that I reviewed here as a carry-everywhere camera. While the D-Lux 8 isn’t in the same class, it still carries the Leica premium.

However, for the average photographer looking to make the most efficient use of limited resources or budget, the Panasonic S5 Mark II X ($2,199 $1,897) is a much more preferable choice compared to the new Leica SL3-S ($5,295). Some Leica enthusiasts might disagree, but I believe the SL series lacks the coolness factor and uniqueness of the M series, offering little in terms of a special experience. This makes it difficult to justify the over $3,000 price difference between these two cameras.

In my experience - and likely for most users - the advantages of the S5 IIX far surpass those of the SL3-S, as detailed above. Additionally, the S5 IIX is more compact and lightweight compared to the Leica, which is a significant benefit. When it comes to lenses, both cameras use the same L-mount, ensuring identical availability and performance. With a $3,000 price difference, the S5 IIX, and even the S5 II, are much more appealing choices than the Leica.
