Sony adds Focus Breathing Compensation to FX6 with a  Firmware Update : are A1 and A7S III next?
Post Date:2022-01-28

Breathing Compensation feature was implemented first in Sony's latest full frame mirrorless hybrid camera, Sony Alpha A7 IV . This function  adjusts the size of the frame electronically by applying a certain percentage of crop in order to minimize lens breathing (for the supported lenses) while changing the focus which is a very useful feature for video shooters who are not using dedicated breathing corrected cine lenses.

Check also The List of Breathing Compansation Compatible Sony Lenses here.

With a recently released firmware V.2.00 for the $5999 Full-frame Cine camera, the Sony  FX6, Sony was able to add this feature to an existing camera, which means that this can potentially be added to other popular Sony mirrorless cameras such as Sony Alpha A1 and Sony Alpha A7S III, which use a very similar processor to the Sony A7 IV. A1 and A7S III are both more expensive and more video oriented cameras compared to Sony A7 IV so owners of these cameras or the potential buyers have been discussing in online forums if this feature can&will be added to their cameras and this latest news shows that it most probably possible. Now the question is, if Sony will do this or leave it to later iterations of these two cameras, I guess we will see soon.

My personal opinion by the way for these 3 cameras is, unless you specifically need features like 8K, 30 fps, 4K 120fps, 51MP, etc., Sony A7 IV at $2499 gives you at least 90% percent of what A1 and A7s III offers and I would go with the A7 IV without any hesitation. It is an almost excellent camera and what we are using as our main camera at Camera Decision.
