Canon EOS R8 + Canon 200-800mm in the Field - Fully Extended
I'm excited to finally have the Canon RF 200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM lens in my hands. I haven't purchased it; instead, I opted to rent it for a few days only. I chose to rent because I've generally been satisfied with my Sony FE 200-600 F5.6-6.3 G OSS for birding, but I was curious to see how the new Canon 200-800mm lens with its 200mm extra reach compares. The prospect of an 800mm reach was particularly appealing, although I was hesitant about some features, like the slow aperture, external zoom, and the placement of the focus ring. After a few days of use, some of my initial reservations were confirmed, yet there were also unexpected positives.

Size Does Matter
The first time I took the lens out of its case, it felt surprisingly familiar, likely because it's only slightly shorter (314mm vs 318mm) and lighter (2,050g / 4.51 lb vs 2,115g / 4.65 lb) than the Sony 200-600mm.

It's a sizable lens but not overly cumbersome until you extend it to 800mm. At that point, it transforms significantly. The laws of physics dictate that to achieve an 800mm distance between the focal and sensor planes, the lens must be long! Adding the included lens hood makes it even more formidable and eye-catching. I'm not one to camouflage my lenses, and realistically, you can't hide the part that extends. Notably, this is one of the rare non-L lenses from Canon that comes with a lens hood included. I wish I could be grateful for this, but it's disappointing Canon doesn't do the same with their other non-L series lenses.

On a positive note, unlike the Sigma 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG DN OS E-mount lens that I've previously used, the 200-800mm is easier to control and stabilize when fully extended. The Sigma is almost 440g (about 1 lb) heavier than the 200-800 despite being shorter, and that extra weight likely contributes to the difference in handling.

Zooming Woes!
My main concern wasn't the lens's length, but rather the process of zooming in and out. There's a 'Smooth-Tight' ring on the lens intended to adjust the zoom ring's tightness, but there seems to be a misunderstanding here. Canon might as well have labeled them 'Tight-Tighter,' as the zoom ring feels heavy even in 'Smooth' mode. This tightness ring, which takes up valuable space, doesn’t seem to help much, to be honest. Yes, the lens does creep when held vertically, but I would have preferred a 'Zoom Lock' switch that takes up less space. The situation worsens when you realize the extent you need to rotate the lens to shift from 200mm to 800mm. With my Sony 200-600mm, I'm accustomed to smoothly zooming from 200 to 600mm with just the tip of my finger in a second, so I found the zooming experience on the 200-800 quite unsatisfactory.

Additionally, for video, be mindful that the tightness of the zoom ring can introduce extra shakes and vibrations as you zoom in and out. It's nearly impossible to do smoothly while handholding. Most of the time, I lost my target when zooming and had to reframe to capture a closer shot of the bird.

Stabilization Insights
I tested the lens with the Canon EOS R8 , which is the most affordable full-frame lens in Canon’s RF mount lineup, excluding older models like the Canon R and RP. Despite its lower price, I found the R8 to be an excellent entry-level full-frame camera. Its primary limitation is the lack of In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS), but the optical Image Stabilization (IS) on the 200-800 lens proved to be quite effective.

While I'm not entirely certain about its performance in stills mode, the stabilization in video mode was noticeably superior to that of my Sony A7R V with the 200-600mm lens. The IS on the 200-600mm seems to be optimized for stills rather than video, resulting in more robotic and jerky movements, whereas the video stabilization with the 200-800 is smoother. However, I did notice some warping at the 800mm end of the 200-800 lens while shooting. I need to further investigate this effect to understand its impact on the final results before making a definitive statement on its severity, but it's worth noting that I haven’t observed anything similar with any of my Sony camera and lens combinations.

The 200-800 lens features only an IS on/off switch and lacks the IS modes found on some other telephoto lenses, but it performed well in various scenarios like panning, and I found the simplicity of the system to have no negative impact on its performance.

Focusing Feedback
The positioning and size of the focus ring on the 200-800 lens were problematic for me; it's located near the camera end of the lens and is quite thin. Despite having larger-than-average hands and fingers, I struggled to comfortably reach the focus ring. The distance between the zoom and focus rings is too great. I prefer not to make too many comparisons with the Sony 200-600, but the ergonomics of that lens are significantly better, which raises my expectations for new lenses. Regarding autofocus performance, I'm not yet fully accustomed to the AF settings on Canon cameras and am still exploring the optimal settings for different scenarios, so I'll limit my comments. However, the autofocus was responsive, fast, and accurate in well-lit conditions. I haven't tested it in low light, so I'll reserve judgment for a future review.
OOF Bird - AF failed to lock on the bird here in multiple tries
In situations with a very bright background with high contrast, I noticed the AF sometimes became confused and failed to lock onto the subject, oscillating back and forth. It's unclear whether this is an issue with the R8 or the 200-800mm lens; further testing with other lenses is required to determine the cause.
Impact of the Slow Aperture
One of my initial major concerns with this lens was its slow aperture range of F6.3-9. Canon chose to maintain low aperture values to keep the lens at a manageable size, similar to their strategy with the Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM and Canon RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM lenses. I primarily tested the 200-800 in bright light conditions and, to be honest, I didn’t notice significant drawbacks from the slow aperture. The high ISO performance of the 24MP R8 is excellent, allowing me to increase the ISO as needed without substantially compromising image detail.

However, this lens’s F9 maximum aperture of 800mm isn’t ideal for low-light situations. I would have preferred it to be at least one stop faster, around F6.3, but at the end of the day, I appreciate Canon’s decision to balance size and weight while still delivering satisfactory performance in many lighting conditions. Such a lens would have been inconceivable a few years ago in the DSLR era when only a few professional-level cameras could autofocus at F8 apertures.
Tripod Collar Issues
Like Nikon and Sony, Canon persists in equipping their long lenses with what seem to be impractical tripod feet, which frustratingly are not compatible with Arca-Swiss or indeed any standard systems. Unlike the Sony 200-600, which features replaceable feet, the 200-800’s feet are fixed. To use them with Arca-Swiss or other common systems like Manfrotto, you must attach an additional plate.

Furthermore, the collar is not detachable, and it lacks a click-stop mechanism for securing the lens when rotating it from horizontal to vertical orientation. The only commendation I can offer regarding Canon’s tripod collar is its comfort; it is very easy to grip by the tripod feet when carrying the lens by hand.

Image Quality Insights

The image quality at 800mm, which is my primary focus with this lens, is quite good. While I didn't expect—and didn't receive—prime lens levels of resolution, the performance is nonetheless very acceptable. I don’t plan to conduct formal resolution tests; instead, I typically assess image quality at 100% on my Apple Studio monitor, and I’m pleased with what I’ve seen so far. The lens pairs well with the 24MP sensor of the R8, and I'm confident it will adequately resolve details on the Canon EOS R5 ’s 45MP sensor as well. When shooting at 800mm, the correct technique—including camera settings and physical stability—is crucial for capturing sharp images, especially when handholding. As for the bokeh, it’s unremarkable but not disappointing. Despite the lens's slow aperture, maintaining sufficient distance between your subject and the background (and occasionally the foreground) results in a pleasingly soft out-of-focus area.

Conclusion
The Canon 200-800mm lens performed in real life better than I anticipated. The slow aperture was not problematic in most scenarios, and the size and weight of the lens were manageable. The 800mm focal length feels transformative; you start to take it for granted once you spend some time with it, and it's difficult to consider using anything shorter once you've grown accustomed to it. In addition, the effectiveness of Image stabilization even at 800mm is impressive.
However, my primary grievance is with how challenging it is to zoom in and out, and the placement of the focus ring. It often felt like I was wrestling with the lens to zoom and manually focus. When I switched back to the Sony 200-600mm, everything felt so much smoother and better positioned, which made me appreciate its design even more. Optically and mechanically, I found the 200-800 is comparable to the 200-600mm; it’s the ergonomics that left something to be desired. Just because of this reason, I decided to not buy the Canon 200-800mm, and use my Sony 1.4x Teleconverter for the extra reach.
If you are not like me and invested in the RF mount though, this lens presents great value and promises lots of fun for $1900 only. The closest available RF zoom alternative is the Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM which is substantially more expensive at $2,899 and the focal reach doesn't even come close.
Pros
The 800mm maximum reach is incredibly useful for bird and wildlife photography.
