Yongnuo 23mm F1.4S DA DSM WL Pro is the latest lens in the Commander series of lenses
I have to admit that Yongnuo was one of those lens manufacturers that had flown under our radar at Camera Decision for quite some time, but better late than never. I’ve now started adding their lenses to our database, kicking things off with the Commander series AF lenses with APS-C sensor coverage for Nikon Z and Sony E mounts, namely the Yongnuo 23mm F1.4S DA DSM WL Pro Z ( Z and E mounts), 33mm F1.4S DA DSM WL Pro Z (Z and E Mounts), 56mm F1.4S DA DSM WL Pro Z (Z Mount), and the 11mm F1.8S DA DSM WL E (E Mount).
Yongnuo BR-L1 Remote Controller
All of these primes feature built-in wireless control capabilities, which is reason enough to give them a closer look. Thanks to the 2.4 GHz wireless module built inside these lenses, some of the focus functions of these lenses such as remote focus, A-B focus, focus speed and video start/stop can be controlled remotely via the use of the YONGNUO BR-L1 Remote Controller that sells for $45.
Yongnuo 11mm F1.8S DA DSM WL E Lens for APS-C Sensor E-Mount cameras
The 23mm F1.4 and 33mm F1.4 lenses are both available for Sony E and Nikon Z mounts, while the 56mm F1.5 is currently limited to Nikon Z and the 11mm F1.8 exclusively to Sony E. For the 23mm and 33mm lenses, there are some noteworthy differences between the two mounts: the Sony E versions include aperture rings and de-click switches, whereas the Nikon Z models use control rings. I’m not entirely sure why Yongnuo chose different feature sets for each mount, and, as is often the case with many Chinese lenses, the official information provided is rather sparse.
Function Switch can be set for custom function or Remote Control
Although these lenses offer advanced external control like Focus Hold buttons, Mode/Function selectors, and aperture de-click switches, the absence of a straightforward AF/MF switch is rather surprising to me.
