Canon RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM
Announced back in December 2023, the Canon RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM has been the only ultra-wide angle lens specifically designed for Canon RF APS-C cameras. While compact and affordable, its slow and variable aperture hasn't fully met the needs of many camera owners. Fortunately, announcements from Sigma and Tamron today promise two more options in this category before the end of 2024: Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary and the Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 Di III-A RXD. These fast, constant F2.8 lenses are already well-regarded in other mounts. Let's see how they compare to Canon's RF-S 10-18 in terms of size and features.

As seen in the image, both the Sigma and especially the Tamron are significantly larger than the Canon. There's clearly a trade-off between size and aperture. If size and weight are your most important considerations, then the RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM is the clear winner. However, if you often shoot in low-light situations, the F2.8 lenses might be worth the investment.

Among these lenses, my personal favorite is the Sigma 10-18mm F2.8, which offers the best balance of size, features, and optical quality. On the other hand, if your priority is having a compact and affordable kit that you can carry around all day, the Canon currently stands as the best—and indeed the only—option until the new lenses are released later in 2024. Whichever you choose, you can't go wrong, and it's certainly great to finally have some options, right?
