7Artisans has just launched two new manual focus full-frame lenses for Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z, and Leica L mounts: the 14mm F2.8 and the 75mm f1.4 , priced at $299 and $189 respectively. It’s a bit puzzling for me why they’re putting out manual focus lenses for these mirrorless systems. Sure, the 14mm f/2.8 makes sense at that wide of a focal length, the deep depth of field gives you some forgiveness when focusing manually. But the 75mm f/1.4? In my experience nailing focus at f/1.4 without autofocus is no easy task.

The 7Artisans 14mm f/2.8 is best suited for landscapes, architecture, astrophotography, and interior shots. Thanks to its ultra-wide angle and relatively deep depth of field, it's great for capturing large scenes where manual focus isn’t too critical. For example, you can use it to shoot the Milky Way in a dark sky area, photograph the interior of a church or small room, or take dramatic cityscapes at twilight. In addition, the click/de-click switch on the 14mm makes it a good candidate for videography incase you change the aperture often during recording.

The 7Artisans 75mm f/1.4, on the other hand, is ideal for portraits, low-light photography, and creative shots where you want a shallow depth of field. The 75mm focal length provides flattering compression for faces, and the fast f/1.4 aperture helps blur the background beautifully. It’s especially useful for artistic portraits in natural light, close-up shots of flowers or objects with dreamy bokeh, or capturing intimate, softly focused moments in available light. However, hitting perfect manual focus wide open can be tricky, especially for moving subjects.
