GoPro has just pulled the curtain back on its most significant hardware shift in years. Moving away from the standard Hero naming convention, the new Mission 1 series focuses heavily on cinematic specs, high-resolution sensors, and a massive boost in battery life.
New GoPro Mission 1 Series Cameras
The standout feature across the new lineup is the inclusion of a 1-inch 50MP sensor. This is a significant jump from the 27MP sensor found in the Hero 13 Black, promising much better low-light performance and up to 14 stops of dynamic range. Driving this hardware is the new GP3 processor, which utilizes a 5nm architecture and an AI Neural Processing Unit to handle the heavy data loads required for 8K video.
Mission 1 Series features a 1-inch 50MP sensor
The series is split into three distinct models:
- Mission 1 Pro: The new flagship. It captures 8K at 60fps in 16:9 and supports 8K/30 and 4K/120 in 4:3 Open Gate mode. For those looking for slow motion, it can push 1080p all the way to 960fps.
- Mission 1 Pro ILS: This is a first for the company—an interchangeable lens system utilizing a Micro Four Thirds mount. It shares the same sensor and processor as the Pro but allows you to swap out glass for telephoto, zoom, or macro shots.
- Mission 1: A slightly scaled-back version that still features the 50MP 1-inch sensor but limits video to 8K/30 and 4K/120.
Mission 1 Pro ILS features a Micro Four Thirds mount
One of the more practical updates is the new Enduro 2 battery. Combined with the efficiency of the GP3 chip, GoPro claims the Mission 1 Pro can record for over five hours at 1080p/30 or roughly three hours at 4K/30. Interestingly, the company states these runtimes are achievable even without airflow, suggesting they have finally made headway on the overheating issues that have plagued smaller cameras in the past.
The physical design has also seen some tweaks. The rear OLED screen is 14% larger than previous models, and the body features raised buttons for easier operation when wearing gloves. It remains rugged, with the Pro model being waterproof down to 66 feet (20 meters) without a housing.
Price and Availability
GoPro has confirmed that pre-orders for the Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro will begin on May 21, 2026, with units shipping globally starting May 28. The specialized Mission 1 Pro ILS is expected to follow later in Q3 2026. Official pricing is expected to be detailed during the NAB tradeshow in late April.
