Olympus E-PL8 vs Fujifilm X-E4: Physical Specs and Body Features Comparison

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Olympus E-PL8 and Fujifilm X-E4 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Olympus E-PL8 has external dimensions of 115 x 67 x 38 mm (4.53 x 2.64 x 1.5″) and weighs 357 g (0.79 lb / 12.59 oz) (including batteries). Fujifilm X-E4 has external dimensions of 121 x 73 x 33 mm (4.76 x 2.87 x 1.3″) and weighs 364 g (0.80 lb / 12.84 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Olympus E-PL8 and the Fujifilm X-E4. Olympus E-PL8 is 6mm narrower and 6mm shorter than Fujifilm X-E4 but it is also 5mm thicker.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Olympus E-PL8 is 7g lighter than the Fujifilm X-E4 but we don't think this will make a significant difference.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since Fujifilm X-E4 has an APS-C sized sensor and Olympus E-PL8 has a smaller Four Thirds sensor, Olympus E-PL8's lenses for a similar focal length and aperture will generally be lighter and smaller than the Fujifilm X-E4 lenses.

Weather Sealing

Unfortunately neither the Olympus PEN E-PL8 nor Fujifilm X-E4 provides any type of weather sealing in their bodies, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. If weather sealing is a must-have feature for you, check these sections:

LCD Screen Size and Features

Olympus E-PL8 and Fujifilm X-E4's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 3.00 inches.

Both cameras feature Tilting screens where you can change the angle of the screen to make it easier to shoot from waist or over-the-head levels.

Olympus E-PL8 vs Fujifilm X-E4: Sensor Comparison

Olympus E-PL8 has a 16.0MP Four Thirds (17.3 x 13 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features TruePic VII processor. On the other hand, Fujifilm X-E4 has a 26.0MP APS-C (23.5 x 15.6 mm ) sized BSI-CMOS sensor and features X-Processor 4 processor.

Fujifilm X-E4's sensor provides 10MP more than Olympus E-PL8's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Fujifilm X-E4's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the E-PL8 and X-E4 sensor size comparison.

Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Olympus E-PL8 and Fujifilm X-E4 Cameras

As seen above, Fujifilm X-E4 has a 1.6x Larger sensor area than Olympus E-PL8. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.

Olympus E-PL8 vs Fujifilm X-E4 Comparison of Available Lenses
Which camera has more lenses?

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. When we look at the available lenses for these two cameras, we see that the Olympus E-PL8 has an advantage over the Fujifilm X-E4. There are 121 lenses for the Olympus E-PL8's Micro Four Thirds mount, but on the other hand, there are only 83 lenses for the Fujifilm X-E4's Fujifilm X lens mount.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Olympus E-PL8 has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization (IS) which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. E-PL8's built-in Image stabilization system is effective for compensating vibration up to 3.5-stops according to CIPA standards.
On the other hand, Fujifilm X-E4 doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 18 lenses for Fujifilm X mount with Optical Image Stabilization features.
