Canon SL3 vs Canon 1200D: Physical Specs and Body Features Comparison

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Canon SL3 and Canon 1200D side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Canon SL3 has external dimensions of 122 x 93 x 70 mm (4.8 x 3.66 x 2.76″) and weighs 449 g (0.99 lb / 15.84 oz) (including batteries). Canon 1200D has external dimensions of 130 x 100 x 78 mm (5.12 x 3.94 x 3.07″) and weighs 480 g (1.06 lb / 16.93 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Canon SL3 and the Canon 1200D. Canon SL3 is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 8mm narrower, 7mm shorter and 8mm thinner than Canon 1200D.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Canon SL3 is 31g lighter than the Canon 1200D but we don't think this will make a significant difference.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Canon SL3 and Canon 1200D have the same Canon EF/EF-S lens mount and APS-C sized sensors, lenses will not be a differentiator on total size of the system.

Weather Sealing

Unfortunately neither the Canon EOS Rebel SL3 (EOS 250D / EOS Kiss X10) nor Canon EOS 1200D (EOS Rebel T5 / EOS Kiss X70) provides any type of weather sealing in their bodies, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. If weather sealing is a must-have feature for you, check these sections:
Top DSLR Cameras with Weather Sealing

LCD Screen Size and Features

Canon SL3 and Canon 1200D's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 3.00 inches.

On the other hand, Canon SL3 sports a Fully Articulated screen which you can change the angle and position of the screen almost freely, making it possible to shoot from waist or over-the-head levels, and especially very useful for shooting selfies and video. Canon 1200D's LCD screen is a fixed type which provides almost no flexibility in shooting positions compared to SL3.

Canon SL3 vs Canon 1200D: Sensor Comparison

Canon SL3 has a 24.0MP APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features DIGIC 8 processor. On the other hand, Canon 1200D has a 18.0MP APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Digic 4 processor.

Canon SL3's sensor provides 6MP more than Canon 1200D's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

Below you can see the SL3 and 1200D sensor size comparison.

Canon SL3 vs Canon 1200D Sensor Size Comparison
Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Canon SL3 and Canon 1200D Cameras

Canon SL3 and Canon 1200D have the same sensor sizes so they will provide same level of control over the depth of field when used with same focal length and aperture. On the other hand, since Canon 1200D has 33% larger pixel area (18.54µm2 vs 13.84µm2) compared to Canon SL3, it has larger pixel area to collect light hence potential to have less noise in low light / High ISO images.

Canon SL3 vs Canon 1200D Comparison of Available Lenses
Which camera has more lenses?

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. Canon SL3 and Canon 1200D have the same Canon EF/EF-S lens mount and currently there are 333 native lenses available for these cameras.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. None of these bodies have sensor based image stabilization so you have to buy lenses with Optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 113 lenses with Image stabilization for Canon EF/EF-S mount.
