Canon T6i vs Pentax K-1: Physical Specs and Body Features Comparison

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Canon T6i and Pentax K-1 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Canon T6i has external dimensions of 132 x 101 x 78 mm (5.2 x 3.98 x 3.07″) and weighs 555 g (1.22 lb / 19.58 oz) (including batteries). Pentax K-1 has external dimensions of 137 x 110 x 86 mm (5.39 x 4.33 x 3.39″) and weighs 1010 g (2.23 lb / 35.63 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Canon T6i and the Pentax K-1. Canon T6i is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 5mm narrower, 9mm shorter and 8mm thinner than Pentax K-1.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Canon T6i is significantly lighter (455g ) than the Pentax K-1 which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since Pentax K-1 has a Full frame sensor and Canon T6i has a smaller APS-C sensor, Canon T6i's lenses for a similar focal length and aperture will generally be lighter and smaller than the Pentax K-1 lenses.

Weather Sealing

Thanks to the weather-sealed body of the K-1, you can use this camera with more confidence under conditions where there is risk of exposure to water and dust compared to the T6i.

LCD Screen Size and Features

Pentax K-1's 3.20" LCD screen is slightly larger than Canon T6i's 3 screen.

Canon T6i vs Pentax K-1: Sensor Comparison

Canon T6i has a 24.0MP APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features DIGIC 6 processor. On the other hand, Pentax K-1 has a 36.0MP Full frame (35.9 x 24 mm ) sized CMOS sensor .

Pentax K-1's sensor provides 12MP more than Canon T6i's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Pentax K-1's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the T6i and K-1 sensor size comparison.

Canon T6i vs Pentax K-1 Sensor Size Comparison
Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Canon T6i and Pentax K-1 Cameras

As seen above, Pentax K-1 has a 2.6x Larger sensor area than Canon T6i. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.

DxOMark Sensor Scores

DxOMark is a benchmark that scientifically assesses image quality of camera sensors. It scores camera sensors for color depth (DXO Portrait), dynamic range (DXO Landscape) and low-light sensitivity (DXO Sports), and also gives them an overall score. Canon T6i and Pentax K-1 sensors have been tested by DxO and the results show that K-1 has a better overall score of 96, 25 points higher compared to T6i's score of 71.

Model Overall Color Depth Dynamic Range Low-light ISO
Canon T6i 71 22.7 bits 12.0 Evs 919 ISO
Pentax K-1 96 25.4 bits 14.6 Evs 3280 ISO
Canon T6i vs Pentax K-1 Comparison of Available Lenses
Which camera has more lenses?

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. When we look at the available lenses for these two cameras, we see that the Canon T6i has an advantage over the Pentax K-1. There are 333 lenses for the Canon T6i's Canon EF/EF-S mount, but on the other hand, there are only 163 lenses for the Pentax K-1's Pentax KAF2 lens mount.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Pentax K-1 has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. K-1's built-in Image stabilization system is effective for compensating vibration up to 5.0-stops according to CIPA standards.
On the other hand, Canon T6i doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 113 lenses for Canon EF/EF-S mount with Optical Image Stabilization features.
