Canon SL3 vs Nikon D3500: Physical Specs and Body Features Comparison

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Canon SL3 and Nikon D3500 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Canon SL3 has external dimensions of 122 x 93 x 70 mm (4.8 x 3.66 x 2.76″) and weighs 449 g (0.99 lb / 15.84 oz) (including batteries). Nikon D3500 has external dimensions of 124 x 97 x 70 mm (4.88 x 3.82 x 2.76″) and weighs 365 g (0.80 lb / 12.87 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Canon SL3 and the Nikon D3500.

Now lets look at the top view comparison of Canon SL3 and Nikon D3500.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Nikon D3500 is significantly lighter (84g ) than the Canon SL3 which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Canon SL3 and Nikon D3500 have the same APS-C sized sensor, their lenses for a similar focal length and aperture will be similar in size and weight.

Weather Sealing

Unfortunately neither the Canon EOS Rebel SL3 (EOS 250D / EOS Kiss X10) nor Nikon D3500 provides any type of weather sealing in their bodies, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. If weather sealing is a must-have feature for you, check these sections:
Top DSLR Cameras with Weather Sealing

LCD Screen Size and Features

Canon SL3 and Nikon D3500's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 3.00 inches.

On the other hand, Canon SL3 sports a Fully Articulated screen which you can change the angle and position of the screen almost freely, making it possible to shoot from waist or over-the-head levels, and especially very useful for shooting selfies and video. Nikon D3500's LCD screen is a fixed type which provides almost no flexibility in shooting positions compared to SL3.

Canon SL3 vs Nikon D3500: Sensor Comparison

Both Canon SL3 and Nikon D3500 have 24.0 MP resolution sensors but Canon SL3's sensor is APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm ) and Nikon D3500's sensor is APS-C (23.5 x 15.6 mm ).

Since Nikon D3500's has a larger sensor area with the same resolution, this means that it also has a larger pixel area hence better light collecting capacity for a given aperture compared to Canon SL3.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Nikon D3500's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the SL3 and D3500 sensor size comparison.

Canon SL3 vs Nikon D3500 Sensor Size Comparison
Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Canon SL3 and Nikon D3500 Cameras

As seen above, Nikon D3500 has a 1.1x Larger sensor area than Canon SL3. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.

Canon SL3 vs Nikon D3500 Comparison of Available Lenses
Which camera has more lenses?

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. When we look at the available lenses for these two cameras, we see that the Canon SL3 has an advantage over the Nikon D3500. There are 333 lenses for the Canon SL3's Canon EF/EF-S mount, but on the other hand, there are only 316 lenses for the Nikon D3500's Nikon F lens mount.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. None of these bodies have sensor based image stabilization so you have to buy lenses with Optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 113 lenses for Canon EF/EF-S mount and 107 lenses for Nikon F mount with IS.
