Canon SL2 vs Pentax K-70 Comparison Overview

In this review, we will be comparing SL2 and K-70, two Entry-Level DSLR cameras from Canon and Pentax. Canon SL2 was introduced to market in June 2017 and Pentax K-70 was launched in June 2016. Canon SL2 vs Pentax K-70: Physical Specs and Body features Comparison

Size and weight is a big decision factor when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, We are going to illustrate Canon SL2 and Pentax K-70 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Canon SL2 has external dimensions of 122 x 93 x 70 mm (4.8 x 3.66 x 2.76″) and weighs 453 g (1.00 lb / 15.98 oz) (including batteries). Weight is another important factor especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Canon SL2 is significantly lighter (235g ) than the Pentax K-70 which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you have to also take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Canon SL2 and Pentax K-70 have the same APS-C sized sensor, their lenses for a similar focal length and aperture will be similar in size and weight.

Weather Sealing

Thanks to the weather sealed body of K-70, you can use this camera with more confidence under conditions where there is risk of exposure to water and dust compared to SL2.

LCD Screen Size and Features

Canon SL2 and Pentax K-70's LCD screens has the same diagonal size of 3.00".

Both cameras feature Fully Articulating screens where you can change the angle of the screen to make it easier to shoot from waist or over the head levels. Fully articulating screens are also useful for taking Selfie shots and video.
Canon SL2 vs Pentax K-70: Sensor Comparison

Both Canon SL2 and Pentax K-70 have 24.0 MP resolution sensors but Canon SL2's sensor is APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm ) and Pentax K-70's sensor is APS-C (23.5 x 15.6 mm ).

Since Pentax K-70's has a larger sensor area with the same resolution, this means that it also has a larger pixel area hence better light collecting capacity for a given aperture compared to Canon SL2.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Pentax K-70's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moire occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the SL2 and K-70 sensor size comparison.

Canon SL2 vs Pentax K-70 Sensor Size Comparison
Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Canon SL2 and Pentax K-70 Cameras

As seen above, Pentax K-70 has a 1.1x Larger sensor area than Canon SL2. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.

Canon SL2 vs Pentax K-70 Comparison of Available Lenses
Which camera has more lenses?

Number of available lenses is a big decision factor while choosing your interchangeable lens camera. When we look at the available lenses for these two cameras, we see that Canon SL2 has an advantage over Pentax K-70. There are 333 lenses for Canon SL2's Canon EF/EF-S mount, on the other hand there are only 161 lenses for Pentax K-70's Pentax KAF2 lens mount.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Pentax K-70 has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. K-70's built-in Image stabilization system is effective to compensate vibration up to 4.5-stops according to CIPA standards.
On the other hand, Canon SL2 doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 113 lenses for Canon EF/EF-S mount with Optical Image Stabilization features.
