Both Nikon L100 and Canon SX120 IS have 10.0 MP resolution sensors but Nikon L100's sensor is 1/2.3-inch (6.08 x 4.56 mm ) and Canon SX120 IS's sensor is 1/2.5-inch (5.744 x 4.308 mm ).

As seen above, Nikon L100 has a 1.1x Larger sensor area than Canon SX120 IS. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.

One thing to watch when comparing these two: they have different sensor sizes

so compare them at the same framing rather than the same focal length.
