Nikon 1 J3 has a
14.0MP 1-inch (13.2 x 8.8 mm ) sized CMOS sensor . On the other hand, Nikon 1 J4 has a
18.0MP 1' (13.2 x 8.8 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Expeed 4 processor.
Below you can see the 1 J3 and 1 J4 sensor size comparison.
Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Nikon 1 J3 and Nikon 1 J4 Cameras
Nikon 1 J3 and Nikon 1 J4 have the same sensor sizes so they will provide same level of control over the depth of field when used with same focal length and aperture. On the other hand, since Nikon 1 J3 has 28% larger pixel area compared to Nikon 1 J4, it has potential to collect more light on pixel level hence have less noise in low light / High ISO images.
Sensor size sets the circle of confusion, so it drives how much depth of field each
of these bodies gives you at a given aperture. You can calculate it exactly for the
Nikon 1 J3
or the
Nikon 1 J4 ,
including hyperfocal distance.
One thing to watch when comparing these two: they have different sensor sizes
(1-inch versus 1'),
so compare them at the same framing rather than the same focal length.
Put the same focal length on the smaller sensor and it will show less depth of
field, not more, because it also crops tighter. The calculator shows the
full frame equivalent focal length for each body so you can match the framing.
