Leica X Vario has a
16.0MP APS-C (23.6 x 15.8 mm ) sized CMOS sensor . On the other hand, Canon G1 X III has a
24.0MP APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features DIGIC 7 processor.
Canon G1 X III's sensor provides 8MP more than Leica X Vario's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely.
On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.
Below you can see the X Vario and G1 X III sensor size comparison.
Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Leica X Vario and Canon G1 X III Cameras
As seen above, Leica X Vario has a 1.1x Larger sensor area than Canon G1 X III. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.
Sensor size sets the circle of confusion, so it drives how much depth of field each
of these bodies gives you at a given aperture. You can calculate it exactly for the
Leica X Vario
or the
Canon G1 X III ,
including hyperfocal distance.
