Leica M9 vs Hasselblad X2D: Physical Specs and Body Features Comparison

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Leica M9 and Hasselblad X2D side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Leica M9 has external dimensions of 139 x 80 x 37 mm (5.47 x 3.15 x 1.46″) and weighs 585 g (1.29 lb / 20.64 oz) (including batteries). Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Leica M9 is significantly lighter (310g ) than the Hasselblad X2D which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since Hasselblad X2D has a Medium format sensor and Leica M9 has a smaller Full frame sensor, Leica M9's lenses for a similar focal length and aperture will generally be lighter and smaller than the Hasselblad X2D lenses.

Weather Sealing

LCD Screen Size and Features

Hasselblad X2D's 3.60" LCD screen is slightly larger than Leica M9's 2.5 screen.

In addition to the size advantage, Hasselblad X2D LCD screen also has a Tilting feature where you can change the angle of the screen to make it easier to shoot from waist or over-the-head levels. On the other hand, Leica M9 has a fixed type screen which provides less flexibility in shooting positions compared to X2D 100c.

Leica M9 vs Hasselblad X2D: Sensor Comparison

Leica M9 has a 18.0MP Full frame (36 x 24 mm ) sized CCD sensor . On the other hand, Hasselblad X2D has a 101.8MP Medium format (44 x 33 mm ) sized CMOS sensor .

Hasselblad X2D's sensor provides 83.8MP more than Leica M9's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

Another difference between these two cameras is that Leica M9's sensor lacks anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the M9 and X2D 100c sensor size comparison.

Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Leica M9 and Hasselblad X2D Cameras

As seen above, Hasselblad X2D has a 1.7x Larger sensor area than Leica M9. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.

Leica M9 vs Hasselblad X2D Comparison of Available Lenses
Which camera has more lenses?

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. When we look at the available lenses for these two cameras, we see that the Leica M9 has an advantage over the Hasselblad X2D. There are 63 lenses for the Leica M9's Leica M mount, but on the other hand, there are only 13 lenses for the Hasselblad X2D's Hasselblad X lens mount.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Hasselblad X2D has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. X2D 100c's built-in Image stabilization system is effective for compensating vibration up to 7.0-stops according to CIPA standards.
On the other hand, Leica M9 doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 0 lenses for Leica M mount with Optical Image Stabilization features.
