Canon 5DS vs Pentax K-1: Physical Specs and Body features Comparison

Size and weight is a big decision factor when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, We are going to illustrate Canon 5DS and Pentax K-1 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Canon 5DS has external dimensions of 152 x 116 x 76 mm (5.98 x 4.57 x 2.99″) and weighs 930 g (2.05 lb / 32.80 oz) (including batteries). Pentax K-1 has external dimensions of 137 x 110 x 86 mm (5.39 x 4.33 x 3.39″) and weighs 1010 g (2.23 lb / 35.63 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front view size comparison of Canon 5DS and Pentax K-1. Pentax K-1 is 15mm narrower and 6mm shorter than Canon 5DS but it is also 10mm thicker.

Weight is another important factor especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Canon 5DS is 80g lighter than the Pentax K-1 but we don't think this will make a significant difference.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you have to also take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Canon 5DS and Pentax K-1 have the same Full frame sized sensor, their lenses for a similar focal length and aperture will be similar in size and weight.

Both 5DS and K-1 have weather sealings in their body, making them resistant to water and dust.

LCD Screen Size and Features

Canon 5DS and Pentax K-1's LCD screens has the same diagonal size of 3.20".

On the other hand, Pentax K-1 sports a Fully Articulated screen which you can change the angle and position of the screen almost freely, making it possible to shoot from waist or over the head levels, and especially very useful for shooting selfies and video. Canon 5DS's LCD screen is a fixed type which provides almost no flexibility in shooting positions compared to K-1.
Canon 5DS vs Pentax K-1: Sensor Comparison

Canon 5DS has a 51.0MP Full frame (36 x 24 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Dual DIGIC 6 processor. On the other hand, Pentax K-1 has a 36.0MP Full frame (35.9 x 24 mm ) sized CMOS sensor .

Canon 5DS's sensor provides 15MP more than Pentax K-1's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Pentax K-1's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moire occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the 5DS and K-1 sensor size comparison.

Canon 5DS vs Pentax K-1 Sensor Size Comparison
Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Canon 5DS and Pentax K-1 Cameras

Canon 5DS and Pentax K-1 have almost the same sensor size so none of them has any significant advantage over other in providing control over depth of field when used with same focal length and aperture.

DxOMark Sensor Scores

DxOMark is a benchmark that scientifically assesses image quality of camera sensors. It scores camera sensors for color depth (DXO Portrait), dynamic range (DXO Landscape) and low-light sensitivity (DXO Sports), and also gives them an overall score. Canon 5DS and Pentax K-1 sensors have been tested by DxO and the results show that K-1 has a better overall score of 96, 9 points higher compared to 5DS's score of 87.

Model Overall Color Depth Dynamic Range Low-light ISO
Canon 5DS 87 24.7 bits 12.4 Evs 2381 ISO
Pentax K-1 96 25.4 bits 14.6 Evs 3280 ISO
Canon 5DS vs Pentax K-1 Comparison of Available Lenses
Which camera has more lenses?

Number of available lenses is a big decision factor while choosing your interchangeable lens camera. When we look at the available lenses for these two cameras, we see that Canon 5DS has an advantage over Pentax K-1. There are 257 lenses for Canon 5DS's Canon EF mount, on the other hand there are only 161 lenses for Pentax K-1's Pentax KAF2 lens mount.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Pentax K-1 has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. K-1's built-in Image stabilization system is effective to compensate vibration up to 5.0-stops according to CIPA standards.
On the other hand, Canon 5DS doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 77 lenses for Canon EF mount with Optical Image Stabilization features.
