Size and weight is a big decision factor when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, We are going to illustrate Canon 4000D and Nikon D3400 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Canon 4000D has external dimensions of 129 x 102 x 77 mm (5.08 x 4.02 x 3.03″) and weighs 436 g (0.96 lb / 15.38 oz) (including batteries). Weight is another important factor especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Nikon D3400 is 41g lighter than the Canon 4000D but we don't think this will make a significant difference.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you have to also take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Canon 4000D and Nikon D3400 have the same APS-C sized sensor, their lenses for a similar focal length and aperture will be similar in size and weight.

Canon 4000D vs Nikon D3400: Sensor Comparison

Canon 4000D has a 18.0MP APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Digic 4+ processor. On the other hand, Nikon D3400 has a 24.0MP APS-C (23.5 x 15.6 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Expeed 4 processor.

Nikon D3400's sensor provides 6MP more than Canon 4000D's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Nikon D3400's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moire occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the 4000D and D3400 sensor size comparison.

Canon 4000D vs Nikon D3400 Sensor Size Comparison
Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Canon 4000D and Nikon D3400 Cameras

As seen above, Nikon D3400 has a 1.1x Larger sensor area than Canon 4000D. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.

DxOMark Sensor Scores

DxOMark is a benchmark that scientifically assesses image quality of camera sensors. It scores camera sensors for color depth (DXO Portrait), dynamic range (DXO Landscape) and low-light sensitivity (DXO Sports), and also gives them an overall score. Canon 4000D and Nikon D3400 sensors have been tested by DxO and the results show that D3400 has a better overall score of 86, 23 points higher compared to 4000D's score of 63.
