Here we are comparing two cameras with different body types: Nikon D3400, which was introduced in August 2016 is a Entry-Level DSLR camera with a 24.0MP APS-C sensor whereas Samsung ST90, which was introduced in January 2011 is a Ultracompact camera with a 14.0MP 1/2.3-inch sensor. As you can see, ST90 is 5 years older than D3400. Let's see if this age difference between two cameras makes a big difference.

Nikon D3400 vs Samsung ST90: Physical Specs and Body Features Comparison

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Nikon D3400 and Samsung ST90 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Nikon D3400 has external dimensions of 124 x 98 x 76 mm (4.88 x 3.86 x 2.99″) and weighs 395 g (0.87 lb / 13.93 oz) (including batteries). Samsung ST90 has external dimensions of 92 x 53 x 17 mm (3.62 x 2.09 x 0.67″) and weighs (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Nikon D3400 and the Samsung ST90. Samsung ST90 is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 32mm narrower, 45mm shorter and 59mm thinner than Nikon D3400. As you can tell, actually this is not a fair size comparison since Samsung ST90 has a built-in lens but Nikon D3400 doesn't. Once you put a lens on D3400, its thickness will increase significantly.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Samsung ST90 is 395g lighter than the Nikon D3400 but we don't think this will make a significant difference.

Again, this comparison may not be very useful in real life as we are comparing the weight of a camera with a built-in lens to the body-only weight of an interchangeable lens camera. Once you put a lens on D3400, the total kit will weigh much higher.

Weather Sealing

Unfortunately neither the Nikon D3400 nor Samsung ST90 provides any type of weather sealing in their bodies, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. If weather sealing is a must-have feature for you, check these sections:

LCD Screen Size and Features

Nikon D3400 and Samsung ST90's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 3.00 inches.

Unfortunately, both cameras has fixed screens so they don't tilt or flip in directions.

Nikon D3400 vs Samsung ST90: Sensor Comparison

Nikon D3400 has a 24.0MP APS-C (23.5 x 15.6 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Expeed 4 processor. On the other hand, Samsung ST90 has a 14.0MP 1/2.3-inch (6.16 x 4.62 mm ) sized CCD sensor .

Nikon D3400's sensor provides 10MP more than Samsung ST90's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

Another difference between these two cameras is that Nikon D3400's sensor lacks anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the D3400 and ST90 sensor size comparison.

Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Nikon D3400 and Samsung ST90 Cameras

As seen above, Nikon D3400 has a 12.9x Larger sensor area than Samsung ST90. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.
