Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Pentax Q-S1 is 28g lighter than the Nikon 1 J5 but we don't think this will make a significant difference.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies.

Weather Sealing

Unfortunately neither the Nikon 1 J5 nor Pentax Q-S1 provides any type of weather sealing in their bodies, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. If weather sealing is a must-have feature for you, check these sections:

LCD Screen Size and Features

Nikon 1 J5 and Pentax Q-S1's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 3.00 inches.

On the other hand, Nikon 1 J5 features a Tilting screen where you can change the angle of the screen to make it easier to shoot from waist or over-the-head levels whereas the Pentax Q-S1 has a fixed type screen which provides less flexibility in shooting positions compared to J5.

Nikon 1 J5 vs Pentax Q-S1: Sensor Comparison

Nikon 1 J5 has a 21.0MP 1' (13.2 x 8.8 mm ) sized BSI-CMOS sensor and features Expeed 5A processor. On the other hand, Pentax Q-S1 has a 12.0MP 1/1.7' (7.44 x 5.58 mm ) sized BSI-CMOS sensor and features Q Engine processor.

Nikon 1 J5's sensor provides 9MP more than Pentax Q-S1's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

Another difference between these two cameras is that Nikon 1 J5's sensor lacks anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the J5 and Q-S1 sensor size comparison.

Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Nikon 1 J5 and Pentax Q-S1 Cameras

As seen above, Nikon 1 J5 has a 2.8x Larger sensor area than Pentax Q-S1. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.

Nikon 1 J5 vs Pentax Q-S1 Comparison of Available Lenses
Which camera has more lenses?

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. When we look at the available lenses for these two cameras, we see that the Nikon 1 J5 has an advantage over the Pentax Q-S1. There are 13 lenses for the Nikon 1 J5's Nikon 1 mount, but on the other hand, there are only 8 lenses for the Pentax Q-S1's Pentax Q lens mount.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Pentax Q-S1 has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. On the other hand, Nikon 1 J5 doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 7 lenses for Nikon 1 mount with Optical Image Stabilization features.
