Leica M9 vs Leica M9-P Comparison Overview

In this review, we will be comparing the M9 and the M9-P, two Pro Mirrorless cameras by Leica. Leica M9 was introduced to the market in September 2009 and Leica M9-P was launched in June 2011. There is 21 months difference between M9 and M9-P so we don't expect to see a huge technology difference between these two cameras but it would still give an advantage to younger M9-P, especially in sensor tech.

Here is a brief look at the main features of the Leica M9 and Leica M9-P before getting into our more detailed comparison.

Leica M9 vs Leica M9-P: Physical Specs and Body Features Comparison

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Leica M9 and Leica M9-P side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Leica M9 has external dimensions of 139 x 80 x 37 mm (5.47 x 3.15 x 1.46″) and weighs 585 g (1.29 lb / 20.64 oz) (including batteries). Leica M9-P has external dimensions of 139 x 80 x 37 mm (5.47 x 3.15 x 1.46″) and weighs 600 g (1.32 lb / 21.16 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Leica M9 and the Leica M9-P. In this case, we can see that Leica M9 and Leica M9-P have the exact same height, width and thickness.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Leica M9 is 15g lighter than the Leica M9-P but we don't think this will make a significant difference.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Leica M9 and Leica M9-P have the same Leica M lens mount and Full frame sized sensors, lenses will not be a differentiator on total size of the system.

Weather Sealing

Unfortunately neither the Leica M9 nor Leica M9-P provides any type of weather sealing in their bodies, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. If weather sealing is a must-have feature for you, check these sections:

LCD Screen Size and Features

Leica M9 and Leica M9-P's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 2.50 inches.

Unfortunately, both cameras has fixed screens so they don't tilt or flip in directions.

Leica M9 vs Leica M9-P: Sensor Comparison

Both Leica M9 and Leica M9-P have Full frame sized 18.0 MP resolution sensors so sensor size and resolution is not a differentiator between these two cameras.

Another similarity between these two cameras is that both Leica M9-P and Leica M9 sensors lack anti-alias (Low-Pass) filters. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the M9 and M9-P sensor size comparison.

Leica M9 vs Leica M9-P Sensor Size Comparison
Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Leica M9 and Leica M9-P Cameras

Leica M9 and Leica M9-P have the same sensor sizes so they will provide same level of control over the depth of field when used with same focal length and aperture.

DxOMark Sensor Scores

Both Leica M9 and Leica M9-P sensors have been tested by DxoMark. DxoMark scores camera sensors for color depth (DXO Portrait), dynamic range (DXO Landscape) and low-light sensitivity (DXO Sports), and also gives them an overall score. Of the two cameras that we are comparing, M9 has scored 69, 1 points higher than M9-P.

Model Overall Color Depth Dynamic Range Low-light ISO
Leica M9 69 22.5 bits 11.7 Evs 884 ISO
Leica M9-P 68 22.5 bits 11.6 Evs 854 ISO
Leica M9 vs Leica M9-P Comparison of Available Lenses
Which camera has more lenses?

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. In this case, both Leica M9 and Leica M9-P have the same Leica M lens mount so have 62 native lenses available. But be careful that only 62 of these lenses can cover the full frame sensors of these cameras.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. None of these bodies have sensor based image stabilization so you have to buy lenses with Optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 0 lenses with Image stabilization for Leica M mount.
