Panasonic GX850 Sensor and Photography Features

Panasonic GX850 has a 16.0MP Four Thirds (17.3 x 13 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Venus Engine processor. You can shoot at maximum resolution of 4592 x 3448 pixels with aspect ratios of 1:1, 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9. GX850 has a native ISO range of 200 - 25600 which can be boosted to 100 and it can save files in RAW format which gives you a wider room for post processing.

Panasonic GX850 is not the highest resolution Four Thirds camera. Panasonic GH6 with its 25.2MP sensor is leading in this class. Check the comparison of Panasonic GX850 vs Panasonic GH6 or take a look at Highest resolution Mirrorless cameras list.

    Panasonic GX850 DxOMark Sensor Scores

DxOMark is a benchmark that scientifically assesses image quality of camera sensors. Panasonic GX850 sensor has been tested by DxO Mark and got an overall score of 73 for its image quality. You can find the details of their analysis of Panasonic GX850 here.

    Anti-Aliasing Filter

Another important feature about Panasonic GX850's sensor is the lack of anti-alias (Low-pass) filter. Removing anti-aliasing filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but on the other side it also increases the chance of moire occurring in certain scenes.

Let's look at how the size of the Panasonic GX850's Four Thirds sensor compares with other standard sensor sizes.

    Panasonic GX850 Sensor Size Comparison
Comparison image of Panasonic GX850 Sensor Size with other standard sensors

    Panasonic GX850 LCD

Panasonic GX850 has a Tilting 3.00-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 1,040k dots. Tilting screens are more photography oriented while Fully articulated screens are highly preferred by videographers. Both the screen size and the screen resolution is up to the standards of this class.

LCD is Touch screen type, so you can change the settings and set the focus point with your fingertips.

Panasonic GX850 back view and LCD

For those of you who loves shooting selfies, self or group photos, Panasonic GX850 will make your life easier with its Selfie friendly screen. Another group of users who will take advantage of GX850's LCD screen are Vloggers and any video creators who are working in a single-person setup.

GX850 doesn't have a viewfinder and no option for external viewfinder. Lack of a viewfinder can be problematic especially under strong light where visibility of LCD screens goes down dramatically. If you need a Mirrorless camera with a built-in viewfinder in a similar price range, consider Fujifilm X-S10 (Compare) or Fujifilm X-T200 (Compare).
Alternatively, check here the list of all Mirrorless cameras with viewfinder..

Panasonic GX850 Connectivity, Storage and Battery

Panasonic GX850 features built-in wireless (Wi-Fi) connectivity ( 802.11b/g/n) which lets you transfer your photos directly to compatible devices without any physical connection. One other feature that we like is the ability to use our smartphone as a remote to control our GX850. You can change camera settings, release shutter, view LCD screen and tranfer files using remote control app.

You can connect GX850 to compatible devices via its HDMI port or USB 2.0 (480 Mbit/sec) port.

    Panasonic GX850 Battery

Panasonic GX850 is powered by DMW-BLH7 battery which provides a battery life of 210 shots according to CIPA standards. Considering that the average battery life of Mirrorless type cameras is 375 shots, Panasonic GX850 has a short battery life for its class so we strongly recommend GX850 owners to invest in some extra batteries.

    Panasonic GX850 Video Features

With Panasonic GX850, you can record your videos at a highest resolution of 3840 x 2160 and save in MPEG-4 and AVCHD formats. Panasonic GX850's 4K is the common standard resolution in consumer video world.

One important factor that you need to take into consideration while shooting video at max resolution of 4K (UHD) with Panasonic GX850 is that there is a crop factor of 1.10x which can make it difficult to achieve wide-angle clips.

It has a Mono speaker but no built-in microphone. On the other hand, Panasonic GX850 doesn't have any connections for external microphones and headphones. If you need a Mirrorless camera with external microphone connectivity, consider Fujifilm X-T200 or Sony Alpha A7 II in a similar price range.

    4K Photo Mode

Utilizing its 4K Video recording abilities in a creative way, Panasonic GX850 sports a 4K Photo Mode where you can capture 8 MP photos from 4K videos. Using a software such as Adobe Lightroom on your PC or in-camera function, you can review the 4K video frame by frame and extract the image that you like the most.

    Panasonic GX850 Other Features

    Max Shutter speed

Panasonic GX850 can shoot continuously at max speed of 10.0 fps and has max shutter speed of 1/500 sec. GX850 also has an electronic shutter which can shoot silently at max speed of 1/16000s. One thing to keep in mind is that electronic shutter may cause rolling shutter / jello effects, and also banding issues under artificial light on your images.

    Flash

Unfortunately GX850 doesn't have an external flash shoe so you are limited with the built-in flash.

    Focusing

Panasonic GX850 features a Contrast Detection autofocusing system. The AF system has 49 points to choose from.

Panasonic GX850 also features Face detection AF where it intelligently detects the faces in the frame and locks the focus automatically.

    Focus Stacking

Macro shooters will love Panasonic GX850's Focus Stacking feature. In this mode, GX850 automatically composites multiple shots taken at different focal positions using focus bracketing to create a single image with maximum depth of field.

    Post Focus

Panasonic GX850 has a special Post Focus mode which uses its 4K video and focus bracketing features together to shoot and stack a burst of images into a single image which you can change the focus point on the LCD screen after it is taken.
