Panasonic S5 II X Sensor and Photography Features

Panasonic S5 II X has a 24.0MP Full frame (35.6 x 23.8 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Venus Engine processor. You can shoot at maximum resolution of 6000 x 4000 pixels with aspect ratios of 1:1, 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9. S5 Mark II X has a native ISO range of 100 - 51200 which can be boosted to 50 - 204800 and it can save files in RAW format which gives you a wider room for post processing.

Panasonic S5 II X is not the highest resolution Full frame camera. Sony A7R V with its 61.0MP sensor is leading in this class. Check the comparison of Panasonic S5 II X vs Sony A7R V or take a look at Highest resolution Mirrorless cameras list.

    High Resolution Mode

Panasonic S5 II X has a special High Resolution mode where the camera takes multiple images of a scene while moving its sensor using the sensor shift image stabilization system and combine them automatically to create a 96 MP MP image. This feature works best with static scenes and using a tripod is a must to minimize stitching artifacts.

    Anti-Aliasing Filter

Another important feature about Panasonic S5 II X's sensor is the lack of anti-alias (Low-pass) filter. Removing anti-aliasing filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but on the other side it also increases the chance of moire occurring in certain scenes.

Let's look at how the size of the Panasonic S5 II X's Full frame sensor compares with other standard sensor sizes.

Panasonic S5 II X Sensor Size Comparison
Comparison image of Panasonic S5 II X Sensor Size with other standard sensors

Panasonic S5 II X LCD and Viewfinder

Panasonic S5 II X has a Fully Articulated 3.00-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 1,840k dots. Articulated screens are more video oriented compared to only tilting or fixed screens. On the other hand, photography oriented users generally prefer tilting screens. Both the screen size and the screen resolution is up to the standards of this class.

LCD is Touch screen type, so you can change the settings and set the focus point with your fingertips.

Panasonic S5 II X back view and LCD

For those of you who loves shooting selfies, self or group photos, Panasonic S5 II X will make your life easier with its Selfie friendly screen. Another group of users who will take advantage of S5 Mark II X's LCD screen are Vloggers and any video creators who are working in a single-person setup.

S5 Mark II X has a built-in Electronic viewfinder, making it easier to shoot in direct sunlight and in other situations where it might be difficult to view the LCD monitor. The viewfinder has a resolution of 3,680kdots and coverage of 100%. 100% coverage ensures that what you see in the viewfinder while shooting matches exactly what you will get later in your image, helping accurate framing your shots and minimizes the need for cropping images later. The magnification ratio of the viewfinder is 0.78x (35mm equivalent).

With Panasonic S5 II X, you can record your videos at a highest resolution of 5952 x 3968 at 30p, 25p, 24p fps with bit rates up to 200 mbps and save in MPEG-4, H.264 and H.265 formats. This means that Panasonic S5 II X provides an impressive 6K video, only second to 8K cameras in high resolution. Although it is not a very widely used format, it gives the user enough extra room over 4K to do cropping or high quality sampling in post-process.

    Video Resolutions Comparison Chart

A great advantage of Panasonic S5 II X while shooting video at resolution of 4K is that there is no crop factor so you can use your lens at its actual focal length.

    No Video Recording Limit

Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 Mark II X doesn't have the 30 minutes max video recording limitation that many cameras have, so you can keep recording non-stop until either your storage is full or battery is depleted or the camera over-heats.

    Microphones, Speaker and Headphone Connections

Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 Mark II X has a built-in Stereo microphone and a Mono speaker. Panasonic S5 II X also has a port for an external microphone and a headphone port for connecting external headphones which make Panasonic S5 II X a very suitable camera high quality videography.

If you are getting into videography and want to know what are the must-have video accessories for your camera, read our article:
Essential Videography / Filmmaking Accessories for your Camera

    Electronic Video Stabilization

Panasonic S5 II X also features an Digital Video Stabilization mode where videos are stabilized in-camera while you are shooting. Keep in mind that this effect may crop your videos a little bit and doesn't help stabilizing still images. This kind of video stabilization effect can be replicated by using some of the advanced video editing softwares in your PC.

    4K Photo Mode

Utilizing its 4K Video recording abilities in a creative way, Panasonic S5 II X sports a 4K Photo Mode where you can capture 8 MP photos from 4K videos. Using a software such as Adobe Lightroom on your PC or in-camera function, you can review the 4K video frame by frame and extract the image that you like the most.

Panasonic S5 II X Other Features

    Max Shutter speed

Panasonic S5 II X can shoot continuously at max speed of 9.0 fps and has max shutter speed of 1/8000 sec. S5 Mark II X also has an electronic shutter which can shoot silently at max speed of 1/8000s. One thing to keep in mind is that electronic shutter may cause rolling shutter / jello effects, and also banding issues under artificial light on your images.

    Flash

Unfortunately S5 Mark II X doesn't have a built-in flash but it has a flash shoe for mounting external flashes.

    Focusing

Panasonic S5 II X features both Contrast Detection and Phase Detection autofocus (AF) systems which ensures speed and accuracy of focusing in most situations. The AF system has 779 points to choose from.

Panasonic S5 II X also features Face detection AF where it intelligently detects the faces in the frame and locks the focus automatically. In addition to the face detect AF, S5 Mark II X has a more sophisticated feature called Eye Tracking AF which detects and locks focus to the selected eye of the person in the frame accurately and tracks as the subject moves. Eye tracking AF of Panasonic S5 II X is a perfect feature for shooting portraits and is especially useful when fast lenses are used and the depth of field is very narrow.

    Focus Stacking

Macro shooters will love Panasonic S5 II X's Focus Stacking feature. In this mode, S5 Mark II X automatically composites multiple shots taken at different focal positions using focus bracketing to create a single image with maximum depth of field.

    Post Focus

Panasonic S5 II X has a special Post Focus mode which uses its 4K video and focus bracketing features together to shoot and stack a burst of images into a single image which you can change the focus point on the LCD screen after it is taken.
