Sony A380 has a
14.0MP APS-C (23.6 x 15.8 mm ) sized CCD sensor and features Bionz processor. On the other hand, Pentax K-x has a
12.0MP APS-C (23.6 x 15.8 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Prime processor.
Below you can see the A380 and K-x sensor size comparison.
Sony A380 and Pentax K-x have the same sensor sizes so they will provide same level of control over the depth of field when used with same focal length and aperture. On the other hand, since Pentax K-x has 14% larger pixel area (30.54µm2 vs 26.58µm2) compared to Sony A380, it has larger pixel area to collect light hence potential to have less noise in low light / High ISO images.
DxOMark Sensor Scores
DxOMark is a benchmark that scientifically assesses image quality of camera sensors. It scores camera sensors for color depth (DXO Portrait), dynamic range (DXO Landscape) and low-light sensitivity (DXO Sports), and also gives them an overall score. Sony A380 and Pentax K-x sensors have been tested by DxO and the results show that K-x has a better overall score of 72, 5 points higher compared to A380's score of 67.
