Sigma fp vs Panasonic S1R: Physical Specs and Body Features Comparison

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Sigma fp is significantly lighter (476g ) than the Panasonic S1R which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Sigma fp and Panasonic S1R have the same Leica L lens mount and Full frame sized sensors, lenses will not be a differentiator on total size of the system.

Weather Sealing

Both the fp and the S1R have weather sealings in their bodies, making them resistant to water and dust.

LCD Screen Size and Features

Sigma fp and Panasonic S1R's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 3.20 inches.

On the other hand, Panasonic S1R features a Tilting screen where you can change the angle of the screen to make it easier to shoot from waist or over-the-head levels whereas the Sigma fp has a fixed type screen which provides less flexibility in shooting positions compared to S1R.

Sigma fp vs Panasonic S1R: Sensor Comparison

Sigma fp has a 25.0MP Full frame (35.9 x 23.9 mm ) sized BSI-CMOS sensor . On the other hand, Panasonic S1R has a 47.0MP Full frame (36 x 24 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Venus Engine processor.

Panasonic S1R's sensor provides 22MP more than Sigma fp's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Panasonic S1R's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the fp and S1R sensor size comparison.

Sigma fp and Panasonic S1R have almost the same sensor size, so neither of them has any significant advantage over the other in terms of providing control over depth of field when used with the same focal length and aperture.

Sigma fp vs Panasonic S1R Comparison of Available Lenses
Which camera has more lenses?

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. Sigma fp and Panasonic S1R have the same Leica L and have total of 62 lenses to choose from.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Panasonic S1R has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. S1R's built-in Image stabilization system is effective for compensating vibration up to 6.0-stops according to CIPA standards.
On the other hand, Sigma fp doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 10 lenses for Leica L mount with Optical Image Stabilization features.
