Pentax K-3 vs Canon 5DS: Physical Specs and Body Features Comparison

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Pentax K-3 and Canon 5DS side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Pentax K-3 has external dimensions of 131 x 100 x 77 mm (5.16 x 3.94 x 3.03″) and weighs 800 g (1.76 lb / 28.22 oz) (including batteries). Canon 5DS has external dimensions of 152 x 116 x 76 mm (5.98 x 4.57 x 2.99″) and weighs 930 g (2.05 lb / 32.80 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Pentax K-3 and the Canon 5DS. Pentax K-3 is 21mm narrower and 16mm shorter than Canon 5DS but it is also 1mm thicker.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Pentax K-3 is significantly lighter (130g ) than the Canon 5DS which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since Canon 5DS has a Full frame sensor and Pentax K-3 has a smaller APS-C sensor, Pentax K-3's lenses for a similar focal length and aperture will generally be lighter and smaller than the Canon 5DS lenses.

Weather Sealing

Both the K-3 and the 5DS have weather sealings in their bodies, making them resistant to water and dust.

LCD Screen Size and Features

Pentax K-3 and Canon 5DS's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 3.20 inches.

Unfortunately, both cameras has fixed screens so they don't tilt or flip in directions.

Pentax K-3 vs Canon 5DS: Sensor Comparison

Pentax K-3 has a 24.0MP APS-C (23.5 x 15.6 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Prime III processor. On the other hand, Canon 5DS has a 51.0MP Full frame (36 x 24 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Dual DIGIC 6 processor.

Canon 5DS's sensor provides 27MP more than Pentax K-3's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

Another difference between these two cameras is that Pentax K-3's sensor lacks anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the K-3 and 5DS sensor size comparison.

Pentax K-3 vs Canon 5DS Sensor Size Comparison
Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Pentax K-3 and Canon 5DS Cameras

As seen above, Canon 5DS has a 2.4x Larger sensor area than Pentax K-3. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.

DxOMark Sensor Scores

DxOMark is a benchmark that scientifically assesses image quality of camera sensors. It scores camera sensors for color depth (DXO Portrait), dynamic range (DXO Landscape) and low-light sensitivity (DXO Sports), and also gives them an overall score. Pentax K-3 and Canon 5DS sensors have been tested by DxO and the results show that 5DS has a better overall score of 87, 7 points higher compared to K-3's score of 80.

Model Overall Color Depth Dynamic Range Low-light ISO
Pentax K-3 80 23.7 bits 13.4 Evs 1216 ISO
Canon 5DS 87 24.7 bits 12.4 Evs 2381 ISO
Pentax K-3 vs Canon 5DS Comparison of Available Lenses
Which camera has more lenses?

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. When we look at the available lenses for these two cameras, we see that the Canon 5DS has an advantage over the Pentax K-3 There are 257 lenses for the Canon 5DS's Canon EF mount, but on the other hand, there are only 163 lenses for the Pentax K-3's Pentax KAF2 lens mount.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Pentax K-3 has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization (IS) which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. On the other hand, Canon 5DS doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 77 lenses for Canon EF mount with Optical Image Stabilization features.
