Panasonic FX48 vs Panasonic G2 Comparison Overview

Here we are comparing two Panasonic cameras cameras with different body types: Panasonic FX48, which was introduced in January 2009 is a Small Sensor Compact camera with a 12.0MP 1/2.3-inch sensor whereas Panasonic G2, which was introduced in July 2010 is a Entry-Level Mirrorless camera with a 12.0MP Four Thirds sensor. There is 17 months difference between FX48 and G2 so we don't expect to see a huge technology difference between these two cameras but it would still give an advantage to younger G2, especially in sensor tech.

Comparing an interchangeble lens camera to a fixed lens camera is a bit tricky but we will do our best to make this a fair comparison.

Panasonic FX48 vs Panasonic G2: Physical Specs and Body features Comparison

Size and weight is a big decision factor when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, We are going to illustrate Panasonic FX48 and Panasonic G2 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Panasonic FX48 has external dimensions of 95 x 53 x 22 mm (3.74 x 2.09 x 0.87″) and weighs 150 g (0.33 lb / 5.29 oz) (including batteries). Panasonic G2 has external dimensions of 124 x 84 x 74 mm (4.88 x 3.31 x 2.91″) and weighs 428 g (0.94 lb / 15.10 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front view size comparison of Panasonic FX48 and Panasonic G2. Panasonic FX48 is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 29mm narrower, 31mm shorter and 52mm thinner than Panasonic G2. As you can tell, actually this is not a fair size comparison since Panasonic FX48 has a built-in lens but Panasonic G2 doesn't. Once you put a lens on G2, its thickness will increase significantly.

Weight is another important factor especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Panasonic FX48 is significantly lighter (278g ) than the Panasonic G2 which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.

Again, this comparison may not be very useful in real life as we are comparing the weight of a camera with a built-in lens to the body-only weight of an interchangeable lens camera. Once you put a lens on G2, the total kit will weigh much higher.

Weather Sealing

Unfortunately neither Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX48 (Lumix DMC-FX40) nor Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2 provides any type of weather sealing in their body, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. If weather sealing is a must-have feature for you, check these sections:

Top Mirrorless Cameras with Weather Sealing

LCD Screen Size and Features

Panasonic G2's 3" LCD screen is slightly larger than Panasonic FX48's 2.5" screen.

Moreover, Panasonic G2 sports a Fully Articulated screen which you can change the angle and position of the screen almost freely, making it possible to shoot from waist or over the head levels, and especially very useful for shooting selfies and video. On the other hand, Panasonic FX48 has a fixed type screen which provides almost no flexibility in shooting positions compared to G2.
Panasonic FX48 vs Panasonic G2: Sensor Comparison

Both Panasonic FX48 and Panasonic G2 have 12.0 MP resolution sensors but Panasonic FX48's sensor is 1/2.3-inch (6.08 x 4.56 mm ) and Panasonic G2's sensor is Four Thirds (17.3 x 13 mm ).

Since Panasonic G2's has a larger sensor area with the same resolution, this means that it also has a larger pixel area hence better light collecting capacity for a given aperture compared to Panasonic FX48.

Below you can see the FX48 and G2 sensor size comparison.
