Panasonic S5 vs Sony QX10: Physical Specs and Body features Comparison

Size and weight is a big decision factor when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, We are going to illustrate Panasonic S5 and Sony QX10 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Panasonic S5 has external dimensions of 133 x 97 x 82 mm (5.24 x 3.82 x 3.23″) and weighs 714 g (1.57 lb) (including batteries). Sony QX10 has external dimensions of 62 x 62 x 33 mm (2.46 x 2.43 x 1.31″) and weighs 105 g (0.23 lb / 3.70 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front view size comparison of Panasonic S5 and Sony QX10. Sony QX10 is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 71mm narrower, 35mm shorter and 49mm thinner than Panasonic S5. As you can tell, actually this is not a fair size comparison since Sony QX10 has a built-in lens but Panasonic S5 doesn't. Once you put a lens on S5, its thickness will increase significantly.

Now lets look at the top view comparison of Panasonic S5 and Sony QX10.

Weight is another important factor especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Sony QX10 is significantly lighter (609g ) than the Panasonic S5 which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.

Again, this comparison may not be very useful in real life as we are comparing the weight of a camera with a built-in lens to the body-only weight of an interchangeable lens camera. Once you put a lens on S5, the total kit will weigh much higher.

Weather Sealing

With its weather sealed body, we believe that S5 has a big advantage over QX10 which doesn't provide any kind of environmental sealing.

LCD Screen Size and Features

Panasonic S5's 3.00" LCD screen is slightly larger than Sony QX10's screen.

Moreover, Panasonic S5 sports a Fully Articulated screen which you can change the angle and position of the screen almost freely, making it possible to shoot from waist or over the head levels, and especially very useful for shooting selfies and video. On the other hand, Sony QX10 has a fixed type screen which provides almost no flexibility in shooting positions compared to S5.
Panasonic S5 vs Sony QX10: Sensor Comparison

Panasonic S5 has a 24.0MP Full frame (35.6 x 23.8 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Venus Engine processor. On the other hand, Sony QX10 has a 18.0MP 1/2.3-inch (6.17 x 4.55 mm ) sized BSI-CMOS sensor .

Panasonic S5's sensor provides 6MP more than Sony QX10's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

Another difference between these two cameras is that Panasonic S5's sensor lacks anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moire occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the S5 and QX10 sensor size comparison.

Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Panasonic S5 and Sony QX10 Cameras

As seen above, Panasonic S5 has a 30.2x Larger sensor area than Sony QX10. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.
