Olympus SZ-30MR vs Nikon D800E Comparison Overview

Here we are comparing two cameras with different body types: Olympus SZ-30MR, which was introduced in March 2011 is a Small Sensor Superzoom camera with a 16.0MP 1/2.3-inch sensor whereas Nikon D800E, which was introduced in June 2012 is a Advanced DSLR camera with a 36.0MP Full frame sensor. There is 15 months difference between SZ-30MR and D800E so we don't expect to see a huge technology difference between these two cameras but it would still give an advantage to younger D800E, especially in sensor tech.

Olympus SZ-30MR vs Nikon D800E: Physical Specs and Body features Comparison

Size and weight is a big decision factor when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, We are going to illustrate Olympus SZ-30MR and Nikon D800E side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Olympus SZ-30MR has external dimensions of 106 x 69 x 40 mm (4.17 x 2.72 x 1.57″) and weighs 226 g (0.50 lb / 7.97 oz) (including batteries). Nikon D800E has external dimensions of 146 x 123 x 82 mm (5.75 x 4.84 x 3.23″) and weighs 900 g (1.98 lb / 31.75 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front view size comparison of Olympus SZ-30MR and Nikon D800E. Olympus SZ-30MR is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 40mm narrower, 54mm shorter and 42mm thinner than Nikon D800E. As you can tell, actually this is not a fair size comparison since Olympus SZ-30MR has a built-in lens but Nikon D800E doesn't. Once you put a lens on D800E, its thickness will increase significantly.

Weight is another important factor especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Olympus SZ-30MR is significantly lighter (674g ) than the Nikon D800E which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.

Again, this comparison may not be very useful in real life as we are comparing the weight of a camera with a built-in lens to the body-only weight of an interchangeable lens camera. Once you put a lens on D800E, the total kit will weigh much higher.

Weather Sealing

Thanks to the weather sealed body of D800E, you can use this camera with more confidence under conditions where there is risk of exposure to water and dust compared to SZ-30MR.

LCD Screen Size and Features

Nikon D800E's 3.2" LCD screen is slightly larger than Olympus SZ-30MR's 3" screen.

Unfortunately, both cameras has fixed screens so they don't tilt or flip in directions.
Olympus SZ-30MR vs Nikon D800E: Sensor Comparison

Olympus SZ-30MR has a 16.0MP 1/2.3-inch (6.17 x 4.55 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features TruePic III+ processor. On the other hand, Nikon D800E has a 36.0MP Full frame (35.9 x 24 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Expeed 3 processor.

Nikon D800E's sensor provides 20MP more than Olympus SZ-30MR's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Nikon D800E's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moire occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the SZ-30MR and D800E sensor size comparison.
