Nikon P500 vs Pentax K-3: Physical Specs and Body features Comparison

Size and weight is a big decision factor when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, We are going to illustrate Nikon P500 and Pentax K-3 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Nikon P500 has external dimensions of 116 x 84 x 10 mm (4.57 x 3.31 x 4.06″) and weighs 494 g (1.09 lb / 17.43 oz) (including batteries). Pentax K-3 has external dimensions of 131 x 100 x 77 mm (5.16 x 3.94 x 3.03″) and weighs 800 g (1.76 lb / 28.22 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front view size comparison of Nikon P500 and Pentax K-3. Nikon P500 is 15mm narrower and 16mm shorter than Pentax K-3 but it is also 26mm thicker. As you can tell, actually this is not a fair size comparison since Nikon P500 has a built-in lens but Pentax K-3 doesn't. Once you put a lens on K-3, its thickness will increase significantly.

Weight is another important factor especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Nikon P500 is significantly lighter (306g ) than the Pentax K-3 which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.

Again, this comparison may not be very useful in real life as we are comparing the weight of a camera with a built-in lens to the body-only weight of an interchangeable lens camera. Once you put a lens on K-3, the total kit will weigh much higher.

Weather Sealing

Thanks to the weather sealed body of K-3, you can use this camera with more confidence under conditions where there is risk of exposure to water and dust compared to P500.

LCD Screen Size and Features

Pentax K-3's 3.2" LCD screen is slightly larger than Nikon P500's 3" screen.

On the other hand, Nikon P500 LCD screen has a Tilting feature where you can change the angle of the screen to make it easier to shoot from waist or over the head levels. On the other hand, Pentax K-3 has a fixed type screen which provides less flexibility in shooting positions compared to P500.
Nikon P500 vs Pentax K-3: Sensor Comparison

Nikon P500 has a 12.0MP 1/2.3-inch (6.17 x 4.55 mm ) sized BSI-CMOS sensor and features Expeed C2 processor. On the other hand, Pentax K-3 has a 24.0MP APS-C (23.5 x 15.6 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Prime III processor.

Pentax K-3's sensor provides 12MP more than Nikon P500's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Pentax K-3's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moire occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the P500 and K-3 sensor size comparison.

Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Nikon P500 and Pentax K-3 Cameras
