Nikon P500 vs Fujifilm X-Pro1 Comparison Overview

Here we are comparing two cameras with different body types: Nikon P500, which was introduced in February 2011 is a Small Sensor Superzoom camera with a 12.0MP 1/2.3-inch sensor whereas Fujifilm X-Pro1, which was introduced in June 2012 is a Advanced Mirrorless camera with a 16.0MP APS-C sensor. There is 17 months difference between P500 and X-Pro1 so we don't expect to see a huge technology difference between these two cameras but it would still give an advantage to younger X-Pro1, especially in sensor tech.

Comparing an interchangeble lens camera to a fixed lens camera is a bit tricky but we will do our best to make this a fair comparison.

Nikon P500 vs Fujifilm X-Pro1: Physical Specs and Body features Comparison

Size and weight is a big decision factor when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, We are going to illustrate Nikon P500 and Fujifilm X-Pro1 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Nikon P500 has external dimensions of 116 x 84 x 10 mm (4.57 x 3.31 x 4.06″) and weighs 494 g (1.09 lb / 17.43 oz) (including batteries). Fujifilm X-Pro1 has external dimensions of 140 x 82 x 43 mm (5.51 x 3.23 x 1.69″) and weighs 450 g (0.99 lb / 15.87 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front view size comparison of Nikon P500 and Fujifilm X-Pro1. Fujifilm X-Pro1 is 2mm shorter and 60mm thinner than Nikon P500 but it is also 24mm wider. As you can tell, actually this is not a fair size comparison since Nikon P500 has a built-in lens but Fujifilm X-Pro1 doesn't. Once you put a lens on X-Pro1, its thickness will increase significantly.

Weight is another important factor especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Fujifilm X-Pro1 is 44g lighter than the Nikon P500 but we don't think this will make a significant difference.

Again, this comparison may not be very useful in real life as we are comparing the weight of a camera with a built-in lens to the body-only weight of an interchangeable lens camera. Once you put a lens on X-Pro1, the total kit will weigh much higher.

Weather Sealing

Unfortunately neither Nikon Coolpix P500 nor Fujifilm X-Pro1 provides any type of weather sealing in their body, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. If weather sealing is a must-have feature for you, check these sections:

LCD Screen Size and Features

Nikon P500 and Fujifilm X-Pro1's LCD screens has the same diagonal size of 3".

On the other hand, Nikon P500 features a Tilting screen where you can change the angle of the screen to make it easier to shoot from waist or over the head levels whereas the Fujifilm X-Pro1 has a fixed type screen which provides less flexibility in shooting positions compared to P500.
Nikon P500 vs Fujifilm X-Pro1: Sensor Comparison

Nikon P500 has a 12.0MP 1/2.3-inch (6.17 x 4.55 mm ) sized BSI-CMOS sensor and features Expeed C2 processor. On the other hand, Fujifilm X-Pro1 has a 16.0MP APS-C (23.6 x 15.6 mm ) sized CMOS X-TRANS I sensor and features EXR Pro processor.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Fujifilm X-Pro1's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moire occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the P500 and X-Pro1 sensor size comparison.
