Nikon P1000 vs Panasonic S5 II: Physical Specs and Body Features Comparison

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Nikon P1000 and Panasonic S5 II side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Nikon P1000 has external dimensions of 146 x 119 x 181 mm (5.75 x 4.69 x 7.13″) and weighs 1415 g (3.12 lb / 49.91 oz) (including batteries). Panasonic S5 II has external dimensions of 134 x 102 x 90 mm (5.29 x 4.03 x 3.55″) and weighs 740 g (1.63 lb / 26.10 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Nikon P1000 and the Panasonic S5 II. Panasonic S5 II is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 12mm narrower, 17mm shorter and 91mm thinner than Nikon P1000. As you can tell, actually this is not a fair size comparison since Nikon P1000 has a built-in lens but Panasonic S5 II doesn't. Once you put a lens on S5 Mark II, its thickness will increase significantly.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Panasonic S5 II is significantly lighter (675g ) than the Nikon P1000 which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.

Again, this comparison may not be very useful in real life as we are comparing the weight of a camera with a built-in lens to the body-only weight of an interchangeable lens camera. Once you put a lens on S5 Mark II, the total kit will weigh much higher.

Weather Sealing

Thanks to the weather-sealed body of the S5 Mark II, you can use this camera with more confidence under conditions where there is risk of exposure to water and dust compared to the P1000.

LCD Screen Size and Features

Nikon P1000's 3.20" LCD screen is slightly larger than Panasonic S5 II's 3 screen.

Nikon P1000 vs Panasonic S5 II: Sensor Comparison

Nikon P1000 has a 16.0MP 1/2.3 (6.17 x 4.55 mm ) sized BSI-CMOS sensor and features Nikon Expeed processor. On the other hand, Panasonic S5 II has a 24.0MP Full frame (35.6 x 23.8 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Venus Engine processor.

Panasonic S5 II's sensor provides 8MP more than Nikon P1000's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Panasonic S5 II's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the P1000 and S5 Mark II sensor size comparison.
