Nikon L31 vs Panasonic GH2 Comparison Overview

Here we are comparing two cameras with different body types: Nikon L31, which was introduced in January 2015 is a Ultracompact camera with a 16.0MP 1/2.3' sensor whereas Panasonic GH2, which was introduced in March 2011 is a Advanced Mirrorless camera with a 16.0MP Four Thirds sensor. As you can see, GH2 is 4 years older than L31. Let's see if this age difference between two cameras makes a big difference.

Nikon L31 vs Panasonic GH2: Physical Specs and Body Features Comparison

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Nikon L31 and Panasonic GH2 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Nikon L31 has external dimensions of 96 x 59 x 29 mm (3.78 x 2.32 x 1.14″) and weighs 160 g (0.35 lb / 5.64 oz) (including batteries). Panasonic GH2 has external dimensions of 124 x 90 x 76 mm (4.88 x 3.54 x 2.99″) and weighs 442 g (0.97 lb / 15.59 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Nikon L31 and the Panasonic GH2. Nikon L31 is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 28mm narrower, 31mm shorter and 47mm thinner than Panasonic GH2. As you can tell, actually this is not a fair size comparison since Nikon L31 has a built-in lens but Panasonic GH2 doesn't. Once you put a lens on GH2, its thickness will increase significantly.

Now lets look at the top view comparison of Nikon L31 and Panasonic GH2.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Nikon L31 is significantly lighter (282g ) than the Panasonic GH2 which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.

Again, this comparison may not be very useful in real life as we are comparing the weight of a camera with a built-in lens to the body-only weight of an interchangeable lens camera. Once you put a lens on GH2, the total kit will weigh much higher.

Weather Sealing

Unfortunately neither the Nikon Coolpix L31 nor Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 provides any type of weather sealing in their bodies, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. If weather sealing is a must-have feature for you, check these sections:

Top Mirrorless Cameras with Weather Sealing

LCD Screen Size and Features

Panasonic GH2's 3.00" LCD screen is slightly larger than Nikon L31's 2.7" screen.

Moreover, Panasonic GH2 sports a Fully Articulated screen which you can change the angle and position of the screen almost freely, making it possible to shoot from waist or over-the-head levels, and especially very useful for shooting selfies and video. On the other hand, Nikon L31 has a fixed type screen which provides almost no flexibility in shooting positions compared to GH2.

Nikon L31 vs Panasonic GH2: Sensor Comparison

Both Nikon L31 and Panasonic GH2 have 16.0 MP resolution sensors but Nikon L31's sensor is 1/2.3' (6.17 x 4.55 mm ) and Panasonic GH2's sensor is Four Thirds (17.3 x 13 mm ).

Since Panasonic GH2's has a larger sensor area with the same resolution, this means that it also has a larger pixel area hence better light collecting capacity for a given aperture compared to Nikon L31.

Below you can see the L31 and GH2 sensor size comparison.

Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Nikon L31 and Panasonic GH2 Cameras

As seen above, Panasonic GH2 has a 8.0x Larger sensor area than Nikon L31. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.
