Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs.
In this section, we are going to illustrate the Leica X-U and Sony a5000 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Leica X-U has external dimensions of 140 x 79 x 88 mm (5.51 x 3.11 x 3.46″) and weighs 635 g (1.40 lb / 22.40 oz) (including batteries). Sony a5000 has external dimensions of 110 x 63 x 36 mm (4.33 x 2.48 x 1.42″) and weighs 269 g (0.59 lb / 9.49 oz) (including batteries).
Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Leica X-U and the Sony a5000. Sony a5000 is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 30mm narrower, 16mm shorter and 52mm thinner than Leica X-U. As you can tell, actually this is not a fair size comparison since Leica X-U has a built-in lens but Sony a5000 doesn't. Once you put a lens on a5000, its thickness will increase significantly.
Here is the back view size comparison of the Leica X-U and Sony a5000.
Now lets look at the top view comparison of Leica X-U and Sony a5000.
Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day.
Sony a5000 is significantly lighter (366g ) than the Leica X-U which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.
Again, this comparison may not be very useful in real life as we are comparing the weight of a camera with a built-in lens to the body-only weight of an interchangeable lens camera. Once you put a lens on a5000, the total kit will weigh much higher.
Weather Sealing
Thanks to the weather-sealed body of the X-U, you can use this camera with more confidence under conditions where there is risk of exposure to water and dust compared to the a5000.
LCD Screen Size and Features
Leica X-U and Sony a5000's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 3.00 inches.
Sony a5000 features a
Tilting-only screen which is mostly only good for shooting from waist or over-the-head levels. On the other hand, Leica X-U sports a
Fully Articulated screen which is more flexible and useful, especially for taking selfies and video.
