Canon 5D MIV vs Nikon P900 Comparison Overview

Here we are comparing two cameras with different body types: Canon 5D MIV, which was introduced in August 2016 is a Advanced DSLR camera with a 30.0MP Full frame sensor whereas Nikon P900, which was introduced in March 2015 is a Small Sensor Superzoom camera with a 16.0MP 1/2.3" sensor. There is 18 months difference between 5D MIV and P900 so we don't expect to see a huge technology difference between these two cameras but it would still give an advantage to younger 5D MIV, especially in sensor tech.

Canon 5D MIV vs Nikon P900: Physical Specs and Body features Comparison

Size and weight is a big decision factor when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, We are going to illustrate Canon 5D MIV and Nikon P900 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Canon 5D MIV has external dimensions of 151 x 116 x 76 mm (5.94 x 4.57 x 2.99″) and weighs 890 g (1.96 lb / 31.39 oz) (including batteries). Nikon P900 has external dimensions of 140 x 103 x 137 mm (5.51 x 4.06 x 5.39″) and weighs 899 g (1.98 lb / 31.71 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front view size comparison of Canon 5D MIV and Nikon P900. Nikon P900 is 11mm narrower and 13mm shorter than Canon 5D MIV but it is also 61mm thicker. As you can tell, actually this is not a fair size comparison since Nikon P900 has a built-in lens but Canon 5D MIV doesn't. Once you put a lens on 5D MIV, its thickness will increase significantly.

Weight is another important factor especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Canon 5D MIV is 9g lighter than the Nikon P900 but we don't think this will make a significant difference.

Again, this comparison may not be very useful in real life as we are comparing the weight of a camera with a built-in lens to the body-only weight of an interchangeable lens camera. Once you put a lens on 5D MIV, the total kit will weigh much higher.

Weather Sealing

With its weather sealed body, we believe that 5D MIV has a big advantage over P900 which doesn't provide any kind of environmental sealing.

LCD Screen Size and Features

Canon 5D MIV's 3.20" LCD screen is slightly larger than Nikon P900's 3" screen.

Canon 5D MIV vs Nikon P900: Sensor Comparison

Canon 5D MIV has a 30.0MP Full frame (36 x 24 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Digic 6+ processor. On the other hand, Nikon P900 has a 16.0MP 1/2.3" (6.17 x 4.55 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Expeed C2 processor.

Canon 5D MIV's sensor provides 14MP more than Nikon P900's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.
