Canon 300D vs Pentax K-50: Physical Specs and Body Features Comparison

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Canon 300D and Pentax K-50 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Canon 300D has external dimensions of 142 x 99 x 72 mm (5.59 x 3.9 x 2.83″) and weighs 645 g (1.42 lb / 22.75 oz) (including batteries). Pentax K-50 has external dimensions of 130 x 97 x 71 mm (5.12 x 3.82 x 2.8″) and weighs 650 g (1.43 lb / 22.93 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Canon 300D and the Pentax K-50. Pentax K-50 is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 12mm narrower, 2mm shorter and 1mm thinner than Canon 300D.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Canon 300D is 5g lighter than the Pentax K-50 but we don't think this will make a significant difference.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Canon 300D and Pentax K-50 have the same APS-C sized sensor, their lenses for a similar focal length and aperture will be similar in size and weight.

Weather Sealing

Thanks to the weather-sealed body of the K-50, you can use this camera with more confidence under conditions where there is risk of exposure to water and dust compared to the 300D.

LCD Screen Size and Features

Pentax K-50's 3.00" LCD screen is slightly larger than Canon 300D's 1.8" screen.

Unfortunately, both cameras has fixed screens so they don't tilt or flip in directions.

Canon 300D vs Pentax K-50: Sensor Comparison

Canon 300D has a 6.0MP APS-C (22.7 x 15.1 mm ) sized CMOS sensor . On the other hand, Pentax K-50 has a 16.0MP APS-C (23.7 x 15.7 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features PRIME M processor.

Pentax K-50's sensor provides 10MP more than Canon 300D's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

Below you can see the 300D and K-50 sensor size comparison.

Canon 300D vs Pentax K-50 Sensor Size Comparison
Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Canon 300D and Pentax K-50 Cameras

Canon 300D and Pentax K-50 have almost the same sensor size, so neither of them has any significant advantage over the other in terms of providing control over depth of field when used with the same focal length and aperture.

DxOMark Sensor Scores

DxOMark is a benchmark that scientifically assesses image quality of camera sensors. It scores camera sensors for color depth (DXO Portrait), dynamic range (DXO Landscape) and low-light sensitivity (DXO Sports), and also gives them an overall score. Canon 300D and Pentax K-50 sensors have been tested by DxO and the results show that K-50 has a better overall score of 79, 24 points higher compared to 300D's score of 55.

Model Overall Color Depth Dynamic Range Low-light ISO
Canon 300D 55 21.0 bits 10.8 Evs 544 ISO
Pentax K-50 79 23.7 bits 13.0 Evs 1120 ISO
Canon 300D vs Pentax K-50 Comparison of Available Lenses
Which camera has more lenses?

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. When we look at the available lenses for these two cameras, we see that the Canon 300D has an advantage over the Pentax K-50. There are 333 lenses for the Canon 300D's Canon EF/EF-S mount, but on the other hand, there are only 163 lenses for the Pentax K-50's Pentax KAF2 lens mount.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Pentax K-50 has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. On the other hand, Canon 300D doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 113 lenses for Canon EF/EF-S mount with Optical Image Stabilization features.
