Canon 100D vs Pentax K-S1: Physical Specs and Body Features Comparison

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Canon 100D and Pentax K-S1 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Canon 100D has external dimensions of 117 x 91 x 69 mm (4.61 x 3.58 x 2.72″) and weighs 407 g (0.90 lb / 14.36 oz) (including batteries). Pentax K-S1 has external dimensions of 121 x 93 x 70 mm (4.76 x 3.66 x 2.76″) and weighs 558 g (1.23 lb / 19.68 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Canon 100D and the Pentax K-S1. Canon 100D is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 4mm narrower, 2mm shorter and 1mm thinner than Pentax K-S1.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Canon 100D is significantly lighter (151g ) than the Pentax K-S1 which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Canon 100D and Pentax K-S1 have the same APS-C sized sensor, their lenses for a similar focal length and aperture will be similar in size and weight.

Weather Sealing

Unfortunately neither the Canon EOS 100D (EOS Rebel SL1) nor Pentax K-S1 provides any type of weather sealing in their bodies, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. If weather sealing is a must-have feature for you, check these sections:
Top DSLR Cameras with Weather Sealing

LCD Screen Size and Features

Canon 100D and Pentax K-S1's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 3.00 inches.

Unfortunately, both cameras has fixed screens so they don't tilt or flip in directions.

Canon 100D vs Pentax K-S1: Sensor Comparison

Canon 100D has a 18.0MP APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Digic 5 processor. On the other hand, Pentax K-S1 has a 20.0MP APS-C (23.5 x 15.6 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Prime MII processor.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Pentax K-S1's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the 100D and K-S1 sensor size comparison.

Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Canon 100D and Pentax K-S1 Cameras

As seen above, Pentax K-S1 has a 1.1x Larger sensor area than Canon 100D. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.

DxOMark Sensor Scores

DxOMark is a benchmark that scientifically assesses image quality of camera sensors. It scores camera sensors for color depth (DXO Portrait), dynamic range (DXO Landscape) and low-light sensitivity (DXO Sports), and also gives them an overall score. Canon 100D and Pentax K-S1 sensors have been tested by DxO and the results show that K-S1 has a better overall score of 78, 15 points higher compared to 100D's score of 63.

Model Overall Color Depth Dynamic Range Low-light ISO
Canon 100D 63 21.8 bits 11.3 Evs 843 ISO
Pentax K-S1 78 23.5 bits 13.0 Evs 1061 ISO
Canon 100D vs Pentax K-S1 Comparison of Available Lenses
Which camera has more lenses?

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. When we look at the available lenses for these two cameras, we see that the Canon 100D has an advantage over the Pentax K-S1. There are 333 lenses for the Canon 100D's Canon EF/EF-S mount, but on the other hand, there are only 161 lenses for the Pentax K-S1's Pentax KAF2 lens mount.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Pentax K-S1 has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. On the other hand, Canon 100D doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 113 lenses for Canon EF/EF-S mount with Optical Image Stabilization features.
