LCD and Viewfinder
Nikon 1 J5 has a Tilting 3″ LCD screen with a resolution of 1,037k dots. Both the screen size and the screen resolution is up to the standards of this class.
LCD is Touch screen type, so you can change the settings and set the focus point with your fingertips. For those of you who loves shooting self portraits or group photos, Nikon 1 J5 will make your life easier with its selfie friendly screen.
J5 doesn't have a viewfinder and no option for external viewfinder. Lack of a viewfinder can be problematic especially under strong light where visibility of LCD screens goes down dramatically. If you need a Mirrorless camera with a built-in viewfinder in a similar price range, consider Olympus OM-D E-M10 II (Compare) or Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 (Lumix DMC-GX80 / Lumix DMC-GX7 Mark II) (Compare). If the price is not an issue, take a look at our Top Rated Cameras with Viewfinders.
Nikon 1 J5 can shoot continuously at max speed of 20.0 fps and has max shutter speed of 1/16000 sec . Unfortunately J5 doesn't have an external flash port so you are limited with the built-in flash.
Nikon 1 J5 features both Contrast Detection and Phase Detection autofocus (AF) systems which ensures speed and accuracy of focusing in most situations. The AF system has 171 points to choose from.
With Nikon 1 J5, you can record your videos at a highest resolution of 3840 x 2160 at 15p fps and save in MPEG-4 and H.264 formats. This means that Nikon 1 J5 provides 4K (Ultra-HD) video, highest resolution that is available in the market today. When viewed on a 4K screen, you will be amazed by the level of details and the crispness. There is also a high speed mode where you can capture videos at 1200fps for ultra slow motion videos. J5 has a built-in Stereo microphone and a Mono speaker.
Nikon 1 J5 doesn't have any connections for external microphones and headphones. If you need a Mirrorless camera with external microphone connectivity, consider Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 or Fujifilm X-T10 in a similar price range.
Connectivity and Storage
Nikon 1 J5 features a built-in wireless connectivity ( 802.11b/g with NFC) which lets you transfer your photos directly to compatible devices without any physical connection.
With its NFC (Near Field Communication) feature, J5 can communicate with devices such as smartphones which are also equipped with this technology by simply touching each other.
One other feature that we like is the ability to use our smartphone as a remote to control our J5. You can change camera settings, release shutter, view LCD screen and tranfer files using remote control app.
You can connect your camera to other devices through HDMI port or via USB 2.0 (480 Mbit/sec) port.
Battery Nikon 1 J5 is powered by EN-EL24 battery which provides a shooting life of 250 according to CIPA standards.
Considering that the average battery life of Mirrorless type cameras is 350 shots, Nikon 1 J5 has a short battery life for its class so we strongly recommend J5 owners to buy some extra batteries.
