12.0MP 1/1.7-inch (7.44 x 5.58 mm ) sized BSI-CMOS sensor . On the other hand, Canon 5D MIII has a
22.0MP Full frame (36 x 24 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Digic 5+ processor.
Canon 5D MIII's sensor provides 10MP more than Nikon P340's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely.
On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

Nikon P340 and Canon 5D MIII sensors have been tested by DxO and the results show that 5D MIII has a better overall score of 81, 27 points higher compared to P340's score of 54.
